The Johnnies defeated the Friars and Huskies in straight sets in their first meetings of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2023) – The St. John's volleyball team will head to Providence and UConn for a pair of BIG EAST matches this weekend.
The Red Storm will travel to Providence, R.I., for the first time since Nov. 19, 2021, on Friday for a showdown in Alumni Hall at 6 p.m. The following day, the Johnnies will face the Huskies in Storrs, Conn., at the UConn Volleyball Center for the first time at 6 p.m.
Both matches will be broadcast on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Live Stats for the Johnnies' match against Providence will be available on Friars.com while their match against UConn will have live stats provided on UConnHuskies.com.
St. John's currently boasts a 10-2 conference mark and is tied for second place in the BIG EAST with No. 17 Creighton. No. 25 Marquette is in sole possession of first place with a 11-1 BIG EAST record, its only loss being to the Red Storm. The Johnnies have won seven of their last eight contests.
With wins over Providence and UConn this weekend, the Johnnies would clinch their fifth conference tournament berth in the last six years.
The Red Storm is coming off a perfect 2-0 weekend after a straight-set sweep over Xavier for the second time this season and a comeback victory over Butler, 3-2. The Johnnies' sweep over the Musketeers marked their seventh of conference competition.
Ludovica Zola was dominant in front of the net this past weekend, earning her second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod of the season. The Milan, Italy, native posted a team-high 13 total blocks across eight sets, averaging 1.63 per set across the weekend. She also tallied seven kills, three digs and three aces. Against Xavier, she registered a career-high seven total blocks, two of which were solo.
Lucrezia Lodi continues to be a powerhouse for St. John's, as she put together her fourth double-double of the season against Xavier on Friday. The outside hitter recorded 14 kills at a 36 percent clip to go along with 10 digs. Lodi tacked on 12 more kills against Butler on Saturday night.
Jones recorded her eighth double-double of the season against the Bulldogs on Saturday. The sophomore logged 18 kills, hit at a 31.7 percent rate and 13 assists with five digs and four total blocks. Giorgia Walther also produced 18 kills in the two-set comeback.
Earlier this season, St. John's took down UConn and Providence in straight sets to kick off BIG EAST play on Sept 22-23. Against the Huskies, Jones paced the squad with 19 kills, while Rashanny Solano Smith contributed 14 digs. Magda Stambrowska pounded 12 kills at a near-perfect 92.3 percent clip against the Friars.
Providence enters the weekend with a 2-10 BIG EAST record and an 8-16 overall mark. Last weekend the Friars went 0-2, falling to Marquette in straight sets and DePaul, 3-1.
