All members of one of the iconic teams in program history will return to New York City on Friday, Feb. 2 for an exclusive dinner reception hosted by the Flat Top Collective. The dinner reception will be held at The Pierre (2 East 61st Street, New York, N.Y.) and begins at 6 p.m. for a meet and greet followed by the formal program at 7 p.m. All proceeds directly benefit Red Storm student-athletes through the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives of the Flat Top Collective. On Saturday, Feb. 3 at Madison Square Garden, St. John's Athletics will also celebrate members of the 1998-99 team during halftime of its BIG EAST matchup with defending National Champion UConn. Led by upperclassmen Tyrone Grant, Lavor Postell and Bootsy Thornton along with future NBA First Round Draft picks the former Ron Artest and Erick Barkley, St. John's earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament South Regional. The Johnnies ran through Samford, Indiana and Maryland to make the sixth Elite Eight in program history. The team's supporting cast featured New York City natives Chudney Gray, Reggie Jessie, Kareem Syed, as well as Collin Charles, Donald Emanuel and Albert Richardson.
St. John's wrapped up the 1998-99 campaign with a 28-9 overall record, including a 14-4 league mark, and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament championship game for just the fifth time in program history. Artest garnered First Team All-BIG EAST honors and became just the 10th player in Johnnies' history to earn consensus All-America status that season. Thornton was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, Postell received Third Team honors and Barkley landed a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
The Johnnies began their historic March Madness run in Orlando with a 26-point win over No. 14 Samford before stunning No. 6 Indiana by 25 points to advance to the second weekend of the tournament for the first time since 1991.
St. John's made its way to Knoxville, Tenn., where the Johnnies rallied to a 14-point victory over No. 2 Maryland. Barkley shined in St. John's Sweet 16 victory against the Terrapins, finishing with a game-high 24 points and nine assists to secure a date two days later with fourth-seeded Ohio State. After trailing the Buckeyes by nine with a minute and a half to play, St. John's whittled down Ohio State's lead to one point with 12 seconds on the clock before coming up just short of a Final Four berth.
