St. John’s Prepares for USF in NIVC Second Round

Red Storm swept Howard, 3-0, in opening round on Friday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will prepare for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Second Round on Saturday, when it faces USF.
After tallying a sweep in the opening round over Howard, 3-0, on Friday night and advancing in the NIVC for the second straight year, the Red Storm will take on the Bulls at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The postseason contest will air on FloSports with Kevin Connelly on the call from Carnesecca Arena. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
After a closely contested first set that saw the Johnnies prevail, 28-26, the home side took control logging 25-21 and 25-14 set scores to clinch an opening round victory over the Bison.
With the win, St. John's progresses to a 24-10 overall record, marking the highest win total for the program since 2007, when it won 33 matches and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
All-BIG EAST selection Erin Jones paced the squad as she has all season on Friday, logging a match-high 16 kills. The sophomore has registered 15 or more kills in 12 matches this season and leads the team with 436 on the year.
Wiktoria Kowalzcyk recorded a match-high 26 assists and chipped in eight digs and two service aces.
In their third NIVC appearance, the Johnnies advance to the second round for the second consecutive year. In 2022, St. John's captured a sweep against Binghamton in the first round, 3-0, before falling to Boston College, 3-0, in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
USF makes its way to the NIVC Second Round after sweeping Buffalo, 3-0, on Friday in Queens. The Bulls won with set scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-14 with Buse Hazan leading the way with 10 kills.
USF holds a 20-11 record and went 13-6 in the American Conference during league play. The Bulls are led by their three all-conference selections- Hazan, Maria Clara Andrade and setter Caroline Dykes.
The two former BIG EAST foes have met 10 times previously, with St. John's leading the all-time series, 6-4. Saturday's postseason tilt marks the first meeting between the schools since 2012 when USF departed the league. In matches at Carnesecca Arena, the Johnnies are 2-0 against the Bulls and have never dropped a set.
