QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's golf program has announced on Thursday that the final round of the 2024 Doc Gimmler will be played on the world renowned Bethpage State Park Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
The annual golf tournament will be renamed as the "Doc Gimmler Red & Black" will take place on Sept. 16-17, 2024. The first two rounds will be played on the Red Course on Monday and the final 18 holes will take place on the prestigious Black Course the following day.
"Hosting the final round of the Doc Gimmler on the Black Course is a huge step for the St. John's men's golf program," said St. John's Head Coach Phil Wildermuth. "There are so many people that had a part in getting us on the Black course. This was a team and community effort to pull this together."
In the 21st century, Bethpage Black has hosted the world's most premier golf tournaments starting with the 2002 U.S. Open, billed the "People's Open," as the first-ever major to be played at a public golf course. The Long Island track welcomed the U.S. Open once again in 2009 and hosted its third major, the PGA Championship in 2019.
In September 2025, the track will serve as the site of The Ryder Cup and will join Oak Hill Country Club as the second-ever New York course to host the competition between the United States and Europe.
The 7,468-yard course is widely considered one of the most difficult and pristine courses in the country. Bethpage Black is ranked the seventh-best public golf course in the United States, according to GolfDigest.com.
The Red Storm golf program hosted the Doc Gimmler on the Black Course for 24 years from 1973-96 before the course was reconstructed prior to hosting its U.S. Open. The Johnnies have utilized the Red Course ever since and will playing on the Black for the first time in 28 years.
This past summer, St. John's junior Peicheng Chen captured the New York State Open title at Bethpage Black, shooting 6-under over 54 holes.
The Red Storm men's golf team will be back on the course in February.
