Former Red Storm shooting guard will compete for spot on WNBA roster
UNCASVILLE, Conn.- St. John's women's basketball shooting guard Jayla Everett received an invite to the WNBA's Connecticut Sun training camp.
The Sun will host a 20-woman training camp this month to determine its roster for the upcoming 2023 WNBA season, which kicks off on May 10 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn against the New York Liberty.
The Sun are fresh off a WNBA Finals appearance before falling to the eventual champion the Las Vegas Aces in a four-game series.
Everett is coming off a stellar 2022-23 season with the Red Storm, where she was unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team and led the squad in scoring averaging 16.0 points per game.
The St. Louis, Mo., native finished in double-figures in 29 of 32 games this season and finished with 20 or more eight times. The guard's scoring average was the highest by a first-year St. John's player since Tawana Jackson in 1994-95.
A prolific shooter from downtown, Everett shot 43.1 percent from beyond-the-arc, which ranked 11th in the country. The sharpshooter nailed 78 triples, the third most in a single-season in St. John's history.
In her first year with the Johnnies, Everett starred for a squad that made its first NCAA Tournament trip in seven years and won its first game in the Big Dance in nine. The shooting guard lifted the Red Storm past Purdue, 66-64, sinking the game-winning floater with 0.3 left on the clock to send it to the NCAA Tournament First Round.
Fueled by Everett and her teammates efforts, St. John's got off to its best start in program history, 13-0, spent nine-straight weeks ranked or receiving votes in one of the two national polls and won 13 BIG EAST games for the first time since 2013-14.
