Women’s Tennis Sweeps No. 5 Georgetown, 4-0, in BIG EAST Championships Quarterfinals

The Red Storm will advance to Saturday’s semifinal match against top-seeded Xavier
CAYCE, S.C. (April 21, 2023) - The fourth-seeded St. John's women's tennis team swept No. 5 Georgetown, 4-0, in the quarterfinal match of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships presented by Jeep on Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The victory sets up the Red Storm for a 9 a.m. semifinal match on Saturday against top-seeded Xavier.
In doubles play, the Red Storm clinched the point with a pair of wins, halting the third match. In the second court, the duo of Mouna Bouzgarrou and Emilie Haakansson notched a 6-2 victory against Paige Gilbert and Ashley Kennedy. The Johnnies ended the doubles matches with a 6-3 win by Lalita Devarakonda and Amaya Lopez over Olivia Ashton and Morgan Coburn.
The Red Storm rode the momentum by notching the first three singles matches to complete the 4-0 sweep. Devarakonda notched her second win of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-4, defeat of Willy Avantike. Bouzgarrou extended her singles match winning streak to seven with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Chloe Bendetti. Willa Bay Breunich claimed the clinching fourth point for the Johnnies with a 6-2, 6-4, win against Coburn. The three remaining matches were dubbed unfinished with the Johnnies having clinched the match.
Xavier enters the semi-final round after a 4-0 sweep of eight-seeded Marquette. Anna Roggenburk and Blessing Nwaozuzu each claimed a pair of wins in their opening round match. The Musketeers finished their conference slate a perfect 3-0. Xavier enters Saturday's match having won five of its last six contests.
In postseason play, the two programs are tied, 3-3. Xavier got the best of the Johnnies, 4-1, in their last match, a semifinal tilt in 2021. Overall, the Musketeers lead the all-time series with the Red Storm, 4-3.
