Red Storm and Mountaineers to meet for the second time since inaugural event in 2019
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will square off with West Virginia next season at WVU Coliseum on Dec. 1 as part of the 2023 BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, it was announced on Thursday by the conference offices.
Tip-off time and a television designation for the matchup will be announced at a later date.
The Red Storm and Mountaineers will meet for the 39th time in the history of the two programs. St. John's has won the last three contests, including a 70-68 victory over the West Virginia at Madison Square Garden in the 2019 edition of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. The Johnnies slightly trail in the all-time series with the Mountaineers, 20-18.
The matchup will feature the top two active winningest coaches in NCAA Division I, as new St. John's Head Coach Rick Pitino (834) and longtime West Virginia Head Coach Bob Huggins (935) have combined for 1,769 victories over their storied careers. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers' teams will meet for the first time since Pitino led Louisville to a 77-74 victory over Huggins' Mountaineers on Feb. 11, 2012, in a BIG EAST showdown. Their last five contests have been decided by three points or fewer.
Since their win over West Virginia in the inaugural BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, the Johnnies have dropped two-straight in the interleague series. St. John's fell to eventual national champion Kansas at UBS Arena during the 2021-22 campaign before dropping a road tilt at Iowa State last season. A trip to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech during the 2020-21 season for the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle was called off due to COVID concerns.
The BIG EAST went 8-2 during the first edition of the event in 2019-20. The conferences split each of the last three seasons, going 3-3 in 2020-21, 5-5 in 2021-22, and 5-5 in 2022-23.
