The 6-foot-9 forward joins the Red Storm after one season with the Jayhawks
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball program filled out its 2023-24 roster on Monday after receiving its latest commitment from rising sophomore forward Zuby Ejiofor. The 6-foot-9 transfer from Kansas officially signed on Monday to play for Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino next season in Queens.
"Zuby is a quality athlete, basketball player and person," said Pitino. "He is an outstanding defensive player who is really going to bolster our front court."
A native of Garland, Texas, Ejiofor played in 25 games last season at Kansas, making a pair of appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the Jayhawks. Over the course of his rookie season, Ejiofor averaged 1.2 points and 1.7 rebounds playing 5.1 minutes per contest. Ejiofor also shot 65.0 percent from the field and was tied for fifth on the team with 15 blocks. Ejiofor put forth his best game of the season against Indiana on Dec. 17, sinking four of his five shots to finish with a season-high eight points in a 22-point victory over the Hoosiers.
A TABC 6A All-State selection as a senior at Garland High School, Ejiofor averaged 21.7 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.9 blocks and 1.9 steals per game during the 2021-22 campaign. He helped guide Garland to a 26-2 record that season en route to the district regular season title after his team posted a perfect 14-0 league mark. As a junior in 2020-21, Ejiofor averaged 21.0 points and 13.0 rebounds at Garland.
Coming out of high school, Ejiofor was ranked No. 44 by Rivals.com, No. 52 by 247sports.com and No. 75 by ESPN100 in the Class of 2022. Ejiofor played AAU basketball for Houston Hoops during the 2022 season, playing 12 games and posting 13.0 points shooting 59.0 percent from the field to go with 8.8 rebounds per contest. Ejiofor also produced four double-doubles with Houston Hoops during the 2022 season, including a 16-point, 16-board, six-block effort against Team Final on the Nike EYBL Circuit.
Ejiofor is the 11th newcomer to sign with the Red Storm this offseason. He bolsters a class that also features reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Jordan Dingle, 2023 NCAA champion Nahiem Alleyne, former Iona standouts Cruz Davis, Sadiku Ibine Ayo, Daniss Jenkins and Quinn Slazinski, former Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection Glenn Taylor Jr., All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team selection RJ Luis, former VMI standout Sean Conway and four-star, top-100 prospect Brady Dunlap. St. John's newcomers will join returnees Joel Soriano, the reigning BIG EAST Most Improved Player, and rising sophomore Drissa Traore for the 2023-24 campaign.
