FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 26, 2023) – The St. John's volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season to Arizona State, falling in straight sets on Saturday at Alico Arena.
The scores of the sets were 11-25, 17-25 and 10-25.
Giorgia Walther led the Red Storm (1-1) with nine kills and three digs. Erin Jones had eight kills, six of which came in the second set, to go along with a career-high 14 digs.
Rashanny Solano Smith made her first career start, finishing with a service ace and seven digs.
The Sun Devils (2-0) didn't trail the Johnnies throughout the entire match, leading from the start in every set. ASU was led by 13 kills, three aces and four blocks from Marta Levinska, who hit an impressive 38.7 percent clip.
ASU controlled the first set from the opening serve to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Sun Devils went on a 13-3 run to open the frame, before the Red Storm produced back-to-back kills from Wiktoria Kowalczyk and Walther, which brought the ASU lead down to nine. ASU grew their lead back to 10 after a failed St. John's challenge on a Walther attack error. Despite trying to start a late rally, the Sun Devil's lead proved to be too much, and they took the set 25-11.
Arizona State opened the second game by scoring four unanswered points before the Johnnies sparked a 4-2 stretch, which cut the Sun Devil lead down to two. Midway through the set, Jones slammed back-to-back kills to lower the Red Storm's deficit to three, but a mix of blocks and errors allowed ASU to run away with the set late, 25-17.
The Sun Devils ripped open the third frame similarly to the first two, scoring five straight points. The Johnnies cut the ASU lead down to five midway through the set, but ASU would go on a 15-5 stretch, closing the door on a Red Storm comeback.
The Johnnies will regroup and take on FGCU tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. to close out the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational.
