Red Storm and Scarlet Knights to meet for first time since 2012
QUEENS, N.Y. – After earning its first road season-opening victory since 2019 with a win over Lehigh, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to build on its recent success as it heads to Piscataway, N.J., to face former BIG EAST foe Rutgers on Monday.
The 7 p.m. contest from Yurcak Field will be live streamed on B1G+.
The Johnnies battled through adversity to emerge victorious over Lehigh, 2-1l, playing with 10 men for the final 23 minutes and seeing a two-goal performance from graduate student Max McNulty. The striker out of Birmingham, England became the first Johnnie with two goals in a season opener since Medufia Kelugo on Aug. 24, 1996, against Fordham.
Alejandro Rabell and Macoumba Ba assisted on McNulty's first goal of the game in the 26th minute while Miguel Diaz helped with his second at the 75th-minute mark. Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan picked up his first win with the Red Storm, making one save in the contest.
The Red Storm will square off with Rutgers for the first time since Oct. 17, 2012, when the Scarlet Knights were a BIG EAST competitor. The Johnnies earned a 2-1 victory at Yurcak Field in their last meeting with Rutgers. The Red Storm defense held the home team without a shot on net until the 58th minute while Andres Vargas and Gabriel Camara found the back of the net. The victory marked the Red Storm's sixth win in seven tries against the Scarlet Knights dating back to 2007.
The 2012 win at Yurcak Field was also the last time the Johnnies defeated one of the eight current Big Ten schools.
The Scarlet Knights will enter Monday's contest on the heels of a tough loss to Delaware, 3-2, on Aug. 24. Rutgers saw goals from Saahb Kular and Cole Cruthers, who combined for four of the team's eight shots on goal.
Led by fifth-year head coach Jim McElderry and his 2022 United Soccer Coaches North Region Staff of the Year, the Scarlet Knights will look to defend its Big Ten Championship this season after being selected to finish fourth in the conference's preseason coaches' poll.
The Big Ten also named Matthew Acosta, Jason Bouregy and Joey Zalinsky as Players to Watch for the upcoming campaign. The trio combined for 24 points in the 2022 season.
