Red Storm to face Utah Tech, New Mexico and CSU Bakersfield in Albuquerque, N.M.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will continue its 2023 campaign on Friday afternoon at the Lobo Invitational.
The Red Storm will play three matches to start the tournament on Friday, when they play Utah Tech at 1 p.m. at The Pit. Later that night, The Johnnies will battle host school, New Mexico at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, St. Johns will close out the invitational against CSU Bakersfield at noon. All three matches will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network, with live stats available at GoLobos.com
The Johnnies will face off against Utah Tech and CSU Bakersfield for the first time in program history.
St. John's and New Mexico have battled twice splitting the series, 1-1. The last meeting between the two programs was in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sept. 5, 2014, where the Red Storm took down the Lobos in straight sets, 3-0.
Joanne Persico's squad started the 2023 season with a 2-1 record at the FGCU Homewood Suites Invitational. The Johnnies opened the tournament taking down Ole Miss in four sets, they then fell to Arizona State in straight sets on Saturday. After dropping their first two sets to FGCU on Sunday, St. John's rallied to defeat the Eagles in five sets.
After an impressive opening weekend of play, Wiktoria Kowalczyk was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Kowalczyk tallied 84 assists, four kills, two aces, 19 digs and six blocks in three matches. The Warsaw, Poland native was also tabbed to the FGCU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Erin Jones and Rashanny Solano Smith had terrific season debuts last weekend. Jones did it all for the Red Storm, amassing 36 kills, 22 of which came against FGCU, 20 helpers and 33 digs to go along with a double-double on Sunday. Solano currently leads the Johnnies in digs with 45. In her first start at libero against FGCU, Solano dug out a team-high 29 balls.
St. John's leads the BIG EAST in aces (20), with Giorgia Walther sitting in second with six.
Utah Tech opened up the 2023 season at the Weber State Tournament, going 1-2 across the opening weekend of play. The Trailblazers returned three starters from 2022, including fifth-year setter Taela Laufiso who had 105 total assists across the first three matches.
The Lobos started their 2023 campaign as UC Irvine Invitational champions, finishing with a 2-1 record. UNM took down Seton Hall and UC Irvine before falling to San Francisco. Former Johnnie, Angela Crosetti was tabbed as the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after leading the conference in digs with 68 at 5.67 digs per set.
CSU Bakersfield begins the 2023 season at a perfect 3-0, after taking down Eastern Washington, Providence and Southern Utah in the Roadrunner Classic. Outside hitter Ava Palm opened the season winning Roadrunner Classic MVP after posting 37 total kills at 3.7 kills per set. Palm's 3.7 kills per set, ranks top-100 in the country.
