Red Storm will look to get back on track after first loss of the 2023 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team will gear up for a Thursday night showdown against Yale at Belson Stadium.
Thursday's matchup will be streamed on ESPN+ with Nick DeLuca and Kevin Connelly on the call from Queens.
The Red Storm will continue its four-game homestand and look to bounce back from its first loss of the 2023 campaign against Lehigh, 4-2.
The Johnnies rallied to knot the score, 2-2, early in the second half after Molly McGlame and Jessica Garziano added goals just 8:24 apart. Ultimately, the Mountain Hawks' Ryelle Shuey recorded two late goals to move St. John's to a 4-1-1 record on the year.
In Saturday's match against the Mountain Hawks, St. John's recorded season highs in shots (18) and corner kicks (11).
A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Garziano has got off to a racing start logging 10 points in the opening six matches. The graduate student ranks top-three in the league in goals (3), assists (4) and points (10). The Long Island native's assists per game mark of 0.8 ranks top-20 in the country.
Lauryn Tran joins Garziano on the conference and national leaderboards with four helpers. The Calgary native logged her fourth assist of the season during Saturday's contest on McGlame's first-ever collegiate goal just 33 seconds into the second half.
Yale comes to Queens with an impressive 4-1-1 record on the 2023 season. The Bulldogs are seeking their fourth-straight victory and third consecutive against a BIG EAST opponent. Last week, Yale tallied a pair of home victories over Seton Hall and UConn.
Junior Ellie Rappole has led the way for the Bulldogs notching a team-high three goals and adding an assist. The midfielder tallied the game-winner in Sunday's 1-0 victory over UConn.
Thursday's contest marks the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs, St. John's leads the series, 4-3. The last meeting came two years ago when the Bulldogs took a 2-0 win on home turf in New Haven, Conn. In 2019, the last time the two faced off in Queens, Zsani Kajan provided the game-winner in the second overtime to lift the Red Storm to a 2-1 victory on Aug. 30.
Following Thursday's match-up, the Johnnies will face their second consecutive Ivy League opponent when Harvard comes to town on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
