Nicole Gordon recorded the equalizer in the 54th minute
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team rallied from a halftime defecit to record a draw with Yale on Thursday night, 2-2.
Nicole Gordon had the crucial equalizer in the 54th minute to bring the Johnnies level at Belson Stadium.
Jordyn Levy registered her third goal of the season just eight minutes into the game off a free kick. Jessica Garziano and Frederique St.-Jean recorded assists on the Johnnies opening goal.
With her latest assist, Garziano tied the all-time program record for most career assists, tying Jamie Clark, who tallied 27 helpers from 1997-2000. The midfielder now has five assists on the season, which leads the BIG EAST.
In the early going, the Red Storm struck first off a set piece from Garziano, as the long ball from near half field sailed into the box, St.-Jean redirected and it fell onto the head of Levy, who bounced it into the net.
Just four minutes later, the Bulldogs responded on a breakthrough from forward Anita Thorvaldsdottir, who navigated her way free and buried a shot into the bottom corner.
As the opening half progressed, Yale (4-1-2) broke through in the 30th minute, after a long ball from Regan Ludstedt found Thorvaldsdottir behind the Johnnies' defense and capitalize to grab her second goal and the Bulldogs first lead of the night.
As the visitors continued to press forward, St. John's (4-1-2) goaltender Maria O' Sullivan came out of her 18-yard box to halt a Thorvaldsdottir breakaway and cleared the danger away in the 39th minute.
Yale continued to carry the momentum in the closing moments of the first half and went to the locker room up, 2-1.
In the latter half, Lauryn Tran carved her way into the box and played a promising cross that was intercepted by the Bulldogs' defense. As the opposition failed to clear, the ball was directed by a Yale player towards a waiting Gordon, who buried the game-tying goal, her second of the season.
In the 60th minute, Garziano fed a pass to Angelina Scoma and the midfielder let it rip but her strike went just wide. Scoma recorded a career-high three shots.
In the final 30 minutes, the two sides continued to battle on a beautiful night in Queens. Each squad earned a pair of corners during the closing stages but neither was able to tally the go-ahead goal and the match ended in a stalemate, 2-2.
Thursday's meeting marked the eighth between the two schools and the first-ever draw.
Next on the schedule, the Johnnies will face their second consecutive Ivy League opponent when Harvard comes to town for the non-conference finale on Sunday, a 1 p.m. tilt at Belson Stadium.
