Red Storm and Golden Eagles have split their last four meetings
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will travel to RV Marquette on Friday for an 8 p.m. ET tilt from Valley Fields.
Friday's contest will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC. Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm is fresh off a 1-1 draw with No. 4 Akron after facing blustery weather conditions and playing down for majority of the contest. Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau netted the Johnnies' lone tally on a spin move in the box after a leading pass from Macoumba Ba to Ank Nibogora eventually found the forward's feet. Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan tallied five saves in the match while the Red Storm defended 16 of the Zips' 18 shots in the second half to draw the No. 4 team in the nation.
Fleuriau Chateau is tied for the BIG EAST lead with six goals, matching Marquette's Brooklyn Merl and Georgetown's Jacob Murrell. With his six tallies that sit 21st in the nation, the Canadian forward is the first player in nearly two decades to score six or more goals through his first nine games, joining Simone Salinno, who scored seven goals to open the 2004 campaign.
The Red Storm enters the slate with 25 assists (6th in NCAA), 18 goals (22nd) and 61 points (15th), all of which sit inside the top three among BIG EAST schools.
The Johnnies and Golden Eagles will battle for the 13th time in program history with St. John's looking to even the series (4-5-3).
A high-power offensive matchup is in store with Marquette on Friday as the winning team has emerged victorious with four-goal victories in each of the last four contests. The Johnnies picked up a pair of 4-0 clean sheets with a road victory on Oct. 4, 2019, followed by a win at Belson on Oct. 23, 2021. Luka Gavran, who made his MLS debut on Sunday with Toronto FC, and Jan Hoffelner combined for the clean sheet, each making two saves apiece.
In the Red Storm's 2019 triumph at Valley Fields, Rafael Bustamante and Atila Ashrafi put the Red Storm ahead by two through 55 minutes of action before current San Antonio FC forward Tani Oluwaseyi rocketed a pair of breakaway chances for a brace against the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles enter Friday's matchup with a 7-1-1 record and a 1-1 conference mark. Marquette jumped into the United Soccer Coaches poll on Sept. 12 and received votes spot entering tomorrow's slate.
In a showdown between the two of the BIG EAST's top scoring programs this season, Marquette paces the conference with 23 total goals (4th in NCAA), a +16 goal differential (4th) and 63 points (9th). The Golden Eagles are also generating the nation's third-best mark with 8.1 shots on goal per game while securing a 55.3 percent shot accuracy, good for seventh in Division I.
The Red Storm will have to stop Marquette's Brooklyn Merl, who paces the team with five goals, two assists and 12 points.
Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg has been steady in net, posting a 0.778 goals against average and a 0.837 save percentage (14th in NCAA). He also leads the conference with four shutouts (12th in NCAA).
