Red Storm to face Siena, Stony Brook and Loyola Maryland in home opening tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team opens up its 2023 home slate when it hosts the ninth annual Jack Kaiser Classic at Carnesecca Arena.
The Johnnies will play two matches to start the tournament on Friday when they battle with Siena at 12:30 p.m. and Stony Brook at 7:30 p.m. St John's will close out the Classic on Saturday when they take on Loyola Maryland at 2 p.m. All three matches will be broadcast on FloSports, with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's and Siena have faced off 13 times throughout both program's histories. The Johnnies lead the all-time series 11-2 and are 5-0 in Carnesecca Arena. The last meeting between the two programs was in Ithaca, N.Y. on Aug. 31, 2018, where the Red Storm took down the Saints in straight sets, 3-0.
The Johnnies and the Seawolves have battled 18 times leading into this Friday's matchup. St. John's owns a 16-2 all-time advantage over Stony Brook, including a 7-2 record at home. The Red Storm last met the Seawolves on Sept. 14, 2021, in Stony Brook, N.Y. where they took the match in four sets.
The Red Storm will meet Loyola Maryland for the first time in program history on Saturday.
Last weekend, Joanne Persico's squad went 2-1 at the Lobo Invitational, boosting their overall record to 4-2. The Johnnies opened the tournament by taking down Utah Tech in four sets before falling to host team, New Mexico. On Saturday morning, the program took down CSU Bakersfield in five sets, 3-2, to close out the weekend.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second consecutive week, after posting 135 total assists, to go along with 12 kills and 17 digs at the Lobo Invitational. The talented setter recorded 30 or more helpers in each match, including a season-high 57 in five sets against CSU Bakersfield.
Rashanny Solano Smith and Erin Jones were both selected to the Lobo Invitational All-Tournament Team last weekend. Solano Smith led the Johnnies in Digs against Utah Tech with 20 and CSU Bakersfield with 15. The Freshman currently leads the Johnnies in digs with 82.
Jones continued to impress, earning two double-doubles against Utah Tech (20 kills and 13 digs) and CSU Bakersfield (16 kills and 10 digs). The sophomore hit a whopping 42.5 percent against Utah Tech and 31.6 percent against CSU Bakersfield.
Giorgia Walther has posted a team-leading 91 kills at 3.96 kills per set, which is good for fourth in the BIG EAST.
Siena has started its season 0-6, most recently falling to Bryant, Lafayette and Northeastern. Preseason All-MAAC Selection, Sara Wagner paces the Saints with 54 kills and 69 points, starting in all six matches.

At the St. Francis Tournament last weekend, Stony Brook finished 1-2, falling to Purdue Fort Wayne and Saint Francis. They took down Manhatten in straight sets. Kali Moore is the kills and points leader for the Seawolves, racking up 81 kills and 95.5 points.
The Greyhounds have opened up the 2023 season with a 3-4 record, most recently falling to Coppin State on Tuesday night in straight sets. Preseason All-Patriot League selection Lauren Link leads her squad in kills with 83 at 3.32 per set. She has also tallied 87.5 points, 24 digs, nine blocks and three aces.
