The Red Storm will look to complete the regular season sweep of the Musketeers at Cintas Center
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 20-point victory over Villanova, the St. John's men's basketball team (13-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) will try for the regular season sweep of Xavier (10-10, 4-5 BIG EAST) on Wednesday when the Johnnies visit Cintas Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET with the national telecast airing on FS1.
FOX Sports announcers Connor Onion and LaPhonso Ellis will call the action from Cincinnati. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 381 and the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm returns to action for the first time since downing the Wildcats, 70-50, on Jan. 24 at Madison Square Garden. Joel Soriano helped lead the Johnnies in one of their most complete performances of the season, as the 6-foot-11 center scored 15 of his 21 points after halftime and grabbed nine rebounds. St. John's also held the Wildcats to season lows with 50 points and shooting 16.0 percent (4-25 3FG) from three.
St. John's and Xavier previously squared off in their BIG EAST opener on Dec. 20 before a sold-out crowd at Carnesecca Arena with the Johnnies rolling to an 81-66 victory. Soriano went for 18 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks and five assists in the wire-to-wire win. Nahiem Alleyne (15), Chris Ledlum (13), Daniss Jenkins (11) and Jordan Dingle (10) also scored double figures.
A win on Wednesday for the Red Storm would mark just the third regular season sweep over Xavier since the Musketeers joined the BIG EAST in 2013. St. John's has won just two times in its previous 10 visits to the Cintas Center with both victories coming during the seasons the Johnnies swept Xavier in 2014-15 and 2021-22. The Red Storm's last win in Cincinnati was on Feb. 16, 2022, as current San Antonio Spur Julian Champagnie scored a team-high 27 points en route to an 86-73 victory.
Xavier has dropped its last two games, falling at Creighton on Jan. 23 and at Connecticut on Sunday. The Musketeers return to Cintas Center for their first home contest since defeating Georgetown, 92-91, on Jan. 19. Quincy Olivari scored a team-high 27 points and shot 5-for-10 from 3-point territory in the win over the Hoyas.
The Musketeers own an 8-4 record at Cintas Center this season, including a 3-1 mark in BIG EAST home games. Olivari has averaged a team-high 23.8 points and has shot 17-for-34 (50.0 pct) from distance in the team's four conference home games.
As a team, Xavier leads the BIG EAST and ranks sixth in Division I averaging 16.7 fastbreak points per contest. The Musketeers also rank second in the league, trailing only St. John's (40.2 rpg), averaging 39.8 rebounds per game.
After its trip to Cincinnati, St. John's will return to Madison Square Garden on Saturday to host No. 1/1 Connecticut. It will be the first time the Red Storm hosts the nation's top-ranked team since taking on eventual national champion Villanova on Jan. 13, 2018, at "The World's Most Famous Arena."
