NEW YORK – St. John's women's basketball standout Unique Drake garnered another award after being named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday morning.
The redshirt senior was recognized as the Greater New York Metropolitan Area's best player for the second time this month, bringing home the accolade on Jan. 9.
In two wins over four days, the sharpshooter averaged 27.0 points in victories over DePaul and Georgetown. She chipped in eight points and four rebounds in an overtime loss at Seton Hall on Jan. 22, totaling 20.7 points per outing in a 2-1 stretch against BIG EAST opponents for the Red Storm.
Drake tied for the third best single-game scoring performance in St. John's women's basketball history at DePaul on Thursday night going off for 36 points. The Columbia, S.C., native scored 18 of her 36 points in the two extra periods in the dramatic 83-77 double-overtime triumph in Chicago. The guard made a career-high 12 field goals and went 6-for-13 from beyond-the-arc. It marked the second time this season Drake has made six or more 3-pointers in a single-contest after tying the program record with seven against Manhattan on Nov. 19.
The prolific scorer followed it up on Sunday with a team-high 18 points, marking the 50th double-digit scoring performance of her career and the 18th in 22 games this season. The veteran went 4-for-4 from the free throw line including a pair of crucial makes to fend off the Georgetown comeback with 4.8 seconds remaining to collect a 57-56 win at Carnesecca Arena.
Drake has far exceeded her offensive production increasing her scoring average from last season by nearly 10 points. She ranks third in the BIG EAST averaging 18.5 points per game. The Columbia, S.C., native has knocked down 58 3-pointers which ranks top-15 in the country. After becoming the 29th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 point threshold, Drake continues to rise up the charts moving into 18th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,242 career points.
Drake and the Johnnies will return to the Carnesecca floor on Wednesday night to face Xavier at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets click here.
