St. John’s to Open Second Half of BIG EAST Play at RV Providence

The Johnnies are looking for first road win at Friars since March 20, 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2024) – Fresh off a three-goal victory over DePaul, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to build off its recent success when it visits divisional rivals RV Providence to open the second half of BIG EAST play on Saturday.
Kick-off from Chapey Field is slated for 12 p.m. Saturday's match will be streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network, powered by FloFC, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies (5-5-3, 3-1-0 BIG EAST) produced a campaign-high 14 points and 25 shots as a team downed the Blue Demons, 4-1, on Oct. 12. The four-goal outing also marked the most in a BIG EAST contest since stifling Marquette, 4-0, on Oct. 23, 2021.
Tyler Morck and Julian Jakopovic secured BIG EAST weekly honors for producing a three-point showing for the Red Storm in the win. Morck earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors after scoring the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute. The Bethpage, N.Y., native also dished the secondary assist to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection Jakopovic, who scored his first goal with the Red Storm 1:16 earlier. The redshirt freshman is also tied for fifth in conference play with five points and is one of 11 BIG EAST players to tally two or more goals in league action this season.
St. John's is ranked second in the BIG EAST and top 30 in the nation with 15.2 shots (18th) and 6.2 attempts on frame (29th) per contest. The team's 21 assists also sit 48th in Division I
Through four league games, the Red Storm paces the conference with 19.5 shots, 7.0 points and 3.0 assists per contest. The Johnnies are also ranked second with eight total goals and 7.0 corners per game.
Saturday's matchup will mark the 39th all-time meeting between the two programs with the Johnnies leading the series with a 21-11-6 overall record. St. John's and Providence have battled to draws in their last two matchups, including a 1-1 draw in its most recent appearance at Chapey Field in 2022. Wesley Leggett provided the equalizer in the 72nd minute after a give-and-go feed between Nigel Griffith and Antek Sienkiel ended up at his feet before booting it into the back of the net. The Johnnies are also 9-5-5 on the road against the Friars.

Providence, who is currently receiving two votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, has averaged 5.8 corners per game, good for 34th in the nation.
