The Red Storm are set for five competitions before NCAA Regionals
QUEENS, N.Y. – Head coach Yury Gelman announced the 2024-25 St. John's fencing competition schedule on Thursday.
The Red Storm will begin competition at the NYU Invitational on Nov. 17 against LIU, Wagner and the host school NYU. This marks the first time St. John's has participated in the event since the 2016-17 season.
Following their season opener, the Johnnies will head north to Waltham, Mass., for the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 3. St. John's will square off against Boston College, Cornell, MIT, Yale and Brandeis throughout the day. In last year's edition of the invitational, the men finished with a 5-2 record while the women notched an impressive 6-1 mark.
On Jan. 19, the fencing action comes to Queens for the St. John's Invitational when the Red Storm welcomes Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and last season's national champion Harvard. Ahmed Ferjani led the way amongst all Johnnies with 14 individual victories in last year's annual home competition.
The following week, St. John's will make the short trip to Brooklyn, N.Y., for the LIU Shark Showcase on Jan. 26. The Red Storm will match up against Columbia, Hunter, Princeton and LIU. Last year, Jan Jurkiewicz and Julia Cieslar each tallied a 9-3 record to lead the way for the men and women, respectively.
After nearly a month-long hiatus, the Johnnies will conclude the regular season at the Temple Invitational on Feb. 23 in the City of Brotherly Love. St. John's will compete against Duke, Penn, Princeton, Penn State and Temple before starting postseason competion.
This year's NCAA Northeast Regional Championships will take place on March 9 on the campus of Tufts University in Medford, Mass. The Red Storm dominated last year's regional, with Paul Fortin, Ferjani and Jurkiewicz sweeping first-place finishes in all three weapons for the men and Cieslar taking home first place in the women's saber.
The 2024-25 season will conclude at the NCAA Championships hosted by Penn State on March 20-23 in State College, Pa. St. John's returns its top two finishers from last year's championships in Cieslar and Nicole Feygin. Cieslar competed to a second-place finish in the women's saber last year, while Feygin completed her spectacular freshman season with third place in the women's epee.
Gelman enters his 30th season at the helm of the Red Storm fencing teams, coaching over 135 All-Americans, 26 individual NCAA Champions and won the 2001 national title. In 2024, Gelman led the Johnnies to its 31st consecutive season finishing top seven or higher nationally.
