Basile scored the game-winner in the 61st minute
QUEENS, N.Y.- St. John's women's soccer knocked off Creighton on Halloween night, 1-0, in the regular season finale.
Nora Basile provided the game-winner in the 61st minute with a world-class finish to give the Johnnies a lead and a home victory to end the 2024 campaign. The freshman's goal marked her second of the season and first since Sept. 22 against UConn when she recorded a tally and an assist.
Emily Riggins logged the assist on Basile's goal marking her second of the season. The junior captain won possession and played a setup pass for the difference maker.
Kayla Bower and Malene Nielsen combined for the shutout at Belson Stadium, marking their fifth of the season. Each goalkeeper tallied a crucial diving save to hold Creighton (8-6-2, 5-4-1 BIG EAST) scoreless.
Madison Mariani tallied a game-high two shots on a beautiful Halloween evening in Queens.
The Bluejays came into the match unbeaten in their last five contests and 5-1-1 over their last seven.
The first real chance came when Creighton ripped a strike from outside the box, darting towards the bottom left corner but Bower sprawled out for the save to keep the score level in the 24th minute.
After the Bluejays controlled possession over the first half hour the tides began to turn as the Red Storm went on the attack. After earning a pair of corners Mariani generated a threatening chance receiving the cross from Stephanie Cornelius and firing a shot just over the crossbar.
In the final seconds of the opening half, Jordyn Levy intercepted a back pass to the Creighton defense and darted straight for goal. The senior dusted a defender with a cutback and steered one on frame but was halted by the goalkeeper Alyssa Zajac.
In the second half, Creighton had an early chance that knocked off the crossbar. St. John's took control after Riggins won possession and made a turn to play Basile. The freshman made a separating move and winded up for a world-class strike that soared over Zajac's head and dropped into the top corner of the net to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
Malene Nielsen played the final 45 minutes in net for the Johnnies making a crucial stop in the 73rd minute. Andrine Westlie veered her way into the box and launched a dart toward the top corner of the twine but Nielsen batted it away to preserve the one-goal advantage.
The Red Storm conclude the 2024 campaign with a 6-7-5 record on the year and ended with a win on Thursday night.
