Erin Jones Logs Triple-Double in Friday’s Setback to Xavier, 3-0

Jones tallied 13 kills, 11 assists and 10 digs
CINCINNATI – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Xavier in straight sets, 3-0, at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati on Friday night. The scores of the sets were 21-25, 21-25 and 16-25.
Erin Jones notched her second triple-double of the season and the third of her career against the Musketeers. The talented junior led St. John's (13-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) with 13 kills on a 31.2 hitting clip to go along with 11 assists and 10 digs. The right-side hitter also tallied three block assists.
Giorgia Walther registered nine kills and five digs in the match while Lucrezia Lodi added eight slams and another five digs. Ludovica Zola picked up five kills paired with a team-high four rejections.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Red Storm with 27 helpers on Friday. The setter also tacked on six digs and two kills.
Rashanny Solano Smith logged a match-high 12 digs in addition to two assists.
The opening set began with a 12-8 Xavier (4-9, 2-1 BIG EAST) edge, as the Musketeers capitalized on nine Red Storm errors. Xavier continued to apply pressure on St. John's, growing its lead to five, 15-10, and forcing a Johnnie timeout. The Red Storm was able to even the frame at 17 with a 7-2 run that featured kills from Walther, Lodi, Zola and Jones, causing the Musketeers to talk things over. Xavier regained control of the frame, closing it out on an 8-4 stretch, 25-21, despite a contested set point.
The second set broke out to a 7-7 stalemate before the Musketeers scored two consecutive points to lead, 9-7, burning a Red Storm timeout. The Johnnies quickly used a 3-1 stint behind two Jones' kills to knot the game at 10. Each team continued to side out to a 21-21 tie until Xavier put together a final 4-0 spurt to take the frame, 25-21, and lead match, 2-0. The tight second stanza featured 18 ties and six lead changes.
The Musketeers erupted for an initial 7-4 advantage in the third period, prompting St. John's to call an early timeout. Xavier increased its lead to eight, 19-11, from a 12-7 scoring stretch. Despite going point-for-point at the end of the set, the Musketeers' lead was too great, as they claimed the final set and the match, 25-16.
St. John's will be back in action on Sunday when it battles DePaul in Chicago. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. ET., inside McGrath-Phillips Arena.
