St. John’s to Visit Villanova on Wednesday

The Red Storm bested the Wildcats in a five-set thriller, 3-2, in Queens earlier this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will head to Pennsylvania for a midweek contest with Villanova on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside Jake Nevin Field House. The match will be streamed on FloSports and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (18-10, 7-7 BIG EAST) is coming off a pair of critical wins against DePaul, 3-1, and Xavier, 3-0, in Queens last weekend. The two victories moved the Red Storm into a three-way tie for fifth place in the BIG EAST at 7-7 with Villanova and Xavier.
On Monday, Erin Jones and Rashanny Solano Smith were tabbed as the BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week after leading the Johnnies over the Blue Demons and the Musketeers. The honors marked the second offensive player of the week nod for Jones this season while Solano Smith was named the league's defensive player of the week for the first time in her career.
Jones impressed yet again last week, registering 37 assists, 27 kills at a 42 percent hitting clip, 24 digs and four aces with a pair of triple-doubles. Against DePaul, The Albuquerque, N.M., product unleashed 22 assists, 15 kills at a 40.7 hitting percentage and 11 digs. She also tallied three service aces in the match.
The junior went on to log her second consecutive triple-double off 15 helpers, 13 digs and 12 kills at a 43.5 hitting percentage versus Xavier on Saturday.
The right-side hitter has secured five triple-doubles in conference play this season and is two shy of tying the BIG EAST single-season record of seven, set by Seton Hall's Shelbey Manthorpe in 2013. Additionally, she is one of six players in the country to register six or more triple-doubles in 2024.
Solano Smith was phenomenal anchoring St. John's back row, posting 34 digs at an impressive 4.86 per set. The sophomore also registered nine assists and three service aces, last weekend.
The libero led all players in the Johnnies' match against the Blue Demons on Friday with 20 digs across four sets. She also totaled six helpers and two aces in the contest. The talented sophomore followed up her performance by posting a match-high 14 digs and an ace against Xavier on Saturday night.
The Limon, Costa Rica native currently leads the Red Storm with 359 digs at 3.90 per set, which ranks third in the BIG EAST.
St. John's will battle Villanova for the 44th time in program history on Wednesday. Earlier this season, the Johnnies outlasted the Wildcats in a five-set thriller, 3-2, inside Carnesecca Arena. Lucrezia Lodi led the match and tied her career high with 24 slams, six digs and two service aces.
Villanova will host the Red Storm with a 14-11 overall record and a 7-7 conference mark. The Wildcats took down Xavier, 3-1, before falling to DePaul, 3-2, last week. 2023 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Abby Harrell has posted a team-leading 336 points and 289 kills to go along with 194 digs and 27 service aces.
Alyssa Nelson and Taylor Jakubowski share setting duties for the Wildcats. Nelson leads the team with 516 assists at 5.61 per set, the 10th best in the league. Jakubowski has earned 400 helpers at 4.35 per set this season.
Following Wednesday's match, St. John's will head to Indianapolis for a date with Butler on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. from historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
