Lucrezia Lodi led the match with 15 kills
MILWAUKEE – The St. John's volleyball team was taken down in a contested matchup with RV Marquette, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The scores of the sets were 20-25, 21-25 and 24-26.
Lucrezia Lodi paced the match with 15 kills at a 45.2 hitting percentage with eight digs, two aces and two assists on Sunday afternoon. Erin Jones tacked on 11 kills and seven digs in Milwaukee.
Magda Stambrowska eclipsed the 500-career kill mark at the Al McGuire Center. The junior recorded eight slams at a 43.9 percent hitting rate paired with two aces and a block.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led St. John's (16-10, 5-7 BIG EAST) and the contest with 35 assists, while adding eight digs and two aces. Rashanny Solano Smith rang up team-high 10 digs and a helper against Marquette (17-6, 11-1 BIG EAST). Bree Martin dug out five balls in the match.
As a team, the Red Storm out blocked the Golden Eagles, 2-1.
The opening stanza began with a 4-4 tie before Marquette ripped off two consecutive points to take a slim 6-4 edge. After St. John's retied the set at 16, the Golden Eagles capitalized on a 3-0 spurt to take a 19-16 advantage and burn a Red Storm timeout. The two squads went on trading points at the end of the frame, but Marquette was able to hold onto its lead and the set, winning it 25-20. Lodi logged five kills at a 62.5 percent clip in the opening game.
The second frame kicked off with the two schools battling to a 4-4 stalemate, but the Golden Eagles rained down a 5-0 spurt to lead, 9-4. A Jones kill sparked a 4-1 St. John's scoring stretch that featured three kills and a Marquette error, cutting its deficit down to two, 10-8. Leading 17-15, the Golden Eagles used back-to-back Natalie Ring kills, growing their advantage to four, 19-15, and forcing the Johnnies' final timeout of the set. Marquette used a 6-3 rally to earn its first set point, 24-18, but the Red Storm contested three straight points before the Golden Eagles claimed the frame, 25-21. Jones hammered six kills in the second stanza.
The two teams exchanged blows to a 9-9 tie to start the third set, until St. John's benefited from a 5-0 run on the back of two Lodi kills to go ahead, 13-9. Down 18-14, Marquette put together an 8-4 rally that knotted the frame up at 22-22. Even at 24, the Golden Eagles took the final set and the match, 26-24, on back-to-back slams from Ring and Carsen Murray. Lodi registered six kills in the final set.
St. John's will return to Queens for a pair of matches against DePaul and Xavier on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 inside Carnesecca Arena.
