Erin Jones registered her fifth triple-double of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Behind a triple-double from Erin Jones and a double-double from Lucrezia Lodi, the St. John's volleyball team overpowered DePaul, 3-1, on Friday night inside Carnesecca Arena.
After dropping the opening frame, St. John's (17-10, 6-7 BIG EAST) claimed the final three. The scores of the sets were 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.
Jones notched her fifth triple-double of the season on 22 assists, 15 kills at a 40.7 hitting percentage and 11 digs. The junior also posted three service aces to rack up 18 total points.
Lodi secured her fifth double-double of the 2024 campaign against DePaul (16-9, 8-5 BIG EAST). The outside hitter slammed 14 kills and dug out 10 balls to go along with two block assists in the match.
Rashanny Solano Smith was excellent on the back row for the Johnnies, ringing up 20 digs, six assists and two aces. Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the contest with 27 helpers while Kya Harris picked up five total rejections.
Giorgia Walther registered 15 kills hit at 30.3 percent with a dig and a block. Ludovica Zola logged six kills at a 66.7 percent rate and two blocks.
As a team, the Red Storm led the match with 59 kills, 57 assists and 52 digs.
DePaul jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open the first stanza, taking advantage of three Jill Pressly kills. St. John's proceeded to go on a 9-4 stretch sparked by five Blue Demon errors, knotting the frame up at 11. After trading points to a 16-16 tie, DePaul registered back-to-back scores, taking a two-point edge, 18-16, and forcing the Johnnies second timeout of the set. Jones pounded two consecutive kills to even the match back up at 20, but DePaul went on a final 5-3 spurt, taking the frame 25-23. Jones earned five kills in the first set.
The Blue Demons raced out to a 5-1 advantage in the second game, forcing an early Johnnie timeout. St. John's countered right back with a 13-6 run that was powered by six kills between Walther, Magda Stambrowska, Zola and Jones to take a three-point edge, 14-11. Exchanging blows to a 20-17 Red Storm lead, the Johnnies were able to polish off the set with a 5-4 rally, claiming the second game, 25-21. Walther posted seven slams in the stanza.
The third period began with a battle to a 13-13 stalemate that had both squads burn a timeout. Tied at 16, the Blue Demons engineered a 4-1 spurt to go ahead, 20-17, but the Johnnies rang up three straight points of their own, knotting the frame back up at 20-all. St. John's used a 5-3 stretch at the end of the game, capped off by a Lodi slam to earn a 25-23 third-set victory. The contested frame featured 14 ties and three lead changes.
