First pair of Johnnies to earn major honors in the same week since the 2017 season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Two days after taking down No. 18 Georgetown, Nigel Griffith and Julian Jakopovic captured BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league on Monday.
The tandem became the first teammates since Jack Shearer and David Enstrom on Sept. 25, 2017, to secure major awards in the same week. Griffith and Jakopovic each picked up their first career conference player of the week accolade with their stellar play on Saturday.
Griffith registered his first career brace in helping the Johnnies earn a 2-0 victory over the Hoyas. His two tallies helped the Red Storm secure its first clean sheet over a ranked opponent since a 1-0 triumph against then-No. 10 Georgetown on Oct. 28, 2017. The Stroudsburg, Pa., native capitalized on his only two shots of the game across 36 minutes of action.
The Johnnies' attacker is tied for the squad lead in goals with Martin Kozak, each scoring four overall and three in conference play. Griffith is also in a three-way tie for second on the team in points with nine.
Jakopovic provided the secondary assist on a brilliant pass into open space for a streaking Augustine Boadi, who tapped the final pass across to Griffith for his second of the game. The German defender matched his career-high in assists (4) and points (6) after logging the helper and playing a full 90 minutes on Saturday. The Red Storm defender has logged 90 minutes of action in 16 of his 17 starts.
The Red Storm will enter the BIG EAST Soccer Championship as the third seed, hosting sixth-seeded Seton Hall on Saturday in a 5 p.m. contest at Belson Stadium. St. John's earned a 1-0 victory on the road over the Pirates on Oct. 23.
Before making its 31st appearance in the conference's postseason slate, the Red Storm will conclude the 2024 regular season tonight when it hosts CCNY in a 6 p.m. contest at Belson Stadium.
