St. John’s Sweeps Xavier in Straight Sets, 3-0

Erin Jones notched her second consecutive triple-double
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team swept Xavier in straight sets, 3-0, behind a full team effort on Saturday night inside Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm won by set scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-14.
Erin Jones notched her second consecutive and sixth triple-double of the season on Saturday night. The junior posted 15 assists, 13 digs and 12 kills at a 43.5 hitting percentage with two blocks in the match. The standout previously registered a triple-double in the first meeting between the squads this season.
Giorgia Walther shined, leading St. John's (18-10, 7-7 BIG EAST) with 14 kills that were hit at 32.3 percent, three digs and a service ace. Lucrezia Lodi tacked on 10 slams, eight digs, two rejections and an ace.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Johnnies with 24 helpers, two digs, two blocks and a match-winning setter dump. Kya Harris paced the Red Storm with three blocks.
Rashanny Solano Smith rang up a match-high 14 digs against Xavier (9-15, 7-7 BIG EAST). Bree Martin dug out five balls in the contest.
As a team, St. John's unleashed 54 digs, 48 kills, 46 assists and seven blocks.
The Red Storm jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the start of the first set behind a trio of kills from Jones. Xavier bounced back with a 7-3 stretch that tied the frame up at 11 and burned the Johnnies' first timeout of the set. Even at 16, the Musketeers took advantage of back-to-back St. John's errors to go ahead, 18-16, forcing the Red Storm's last timeout of the frame. The Johnnies ignited a 5-1 rally, but Xavier retied the game at 21-all with two consecutive points. Consecutive Lodi kills closed out the set in St. John's favor, 25-23. Jones registered five digs, four kills and four assists in the opening game.

After the Musketeers cut the Johnnies' edge to one, 8-7, St. John's went on a 5-0 run that grew its advantage up to six, 13-7. Down 17-11, Xavier went on a 5-1 spurt that deminished the lead to three, 19-16, before St. John's went on a decisive 6-3 stretch to win the second frame, 25-19. Walther slammed nine kills in the second stanza.
The Johnnies amassed a 7-2 advantage to kick off the third game, but the Musketeers quickly responded with six unanswered points, taking a one-point edge, 8-7. The Red Storm engineered a massive 14-3 run that featured four kills from Jones to take a 10-point, 21-11 lead at the end of the set. St. John's breezed through the rest of the stanza, claiming the set and the match, 25-14. Jones registered seven kills at a 77.8 percent clip in the final period.
St. John's will head to Pennsylvania for a midweek match with Villanova on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Jake Nevin Field House.
