The senior ranks top-15 in the country in steals per game
NEW YORK– St. John's women's basketball guard Lashae Dwyer was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA) Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday morning.
Dwyer was named the area's top player over the last week after leading the Johnnies to a pair of wins over Penn State and Wake Forest. The senior averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 steals and 4.5 rebounds in two starts last week.
The Toronto native has been a difference-maker on the defensive end for a Red Storm squad that ranks top-five in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 49.3 points per game. Dwyer ranks top-15 in the country averaging 3.1 steals per game. Over her last four appearances, the senior is logging 4.5 swipes per contest.
In the win at Penn State, Dwyer poured in a career-high 25 points, while shooting 10-for-15 from field goal range. Additionally, she recorded seven steals, six rebounds and five assists. The guard became just one of four players in NCAA Division I this season to record 25 or more points and seven or more steals in a single-game this season.
Following one of the best performances of her career, the Miami transfer chipped in 14 points and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe on Sunday against Wake Forest. Dwyer has finished in double-figures in eight of nine contests and ranks top-10 in the BIG EAST posting 15.8 points per game.
Dwyer has racked up awards so far this season, landing on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times. The guard becomes the first St. John's player to earn All-MET Player of the Week honors since Unique Drake on Jan. 9.
Dwyer and the Red Storm return to action tomorrow night when it meets local foe Hofstra at 6 p.m. on Long Island. Wednesday's contest will be streamed on MSG Sports Network and FloSports.
