St. John’s to Face BIG EAST Foe UConn in Great Eight Round of the NIVC

The Red Storm will make an appearance in the third round of the NIVC for the first time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – After taking down Virginia, 3-1, last Sunday, the St. John's volleyball team is set to host BIG EAST foe UConn on Thursday night in the Great Eight round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. The match will be streamed on FloSports with Johnny Gadamowitz on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Tickets for the general public are available for $10, while tickets for seniors and children aged 12 and under will cost $5. Admission is free for the St. John's students. To purchase tickets or receive more information visit RedStormTix.com.
The Red Storm is set to continue its postseason run by making its first-ever appearance in the Great Eight round of the NIVC against UConn. Furthermore, the match marks the first time in BIG EAST history that two member schools have clashed following the BIG EAST Tournament.
On Sunday, the Johnnies defeated Virginia, 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20), at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va., in the second round of the NIVC. With the win, St. John's earned hosting rights, marking the third time in program history that the team will host a round of a postseason tournament. Last season, the Red Storm hosted the opening two rounds of the event and in 2007, it hosted the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
On Tuesday, Erin Jones was selected to the AVCA All-Region Team for the second consecutive season. The two-time All-BIG EAST selection has been a force for the Red Storm in 2024, leading the team in points (554.5), kills (469), service aces (53), points per set (4.30), kills per set (3.64) and aces per set (0.41). Additionally, Jones is one of six players in program history to be tabbed to an AVCA All-Region Team multiple times.
The junior picked up her second-straight and 11th triple-double of the season against Virginia on Sunday. The Albuquerque, N.M., native racked up 16 assists, 13 digs and 12 kills, to go along with two blocks and two aces.
Giorgia Walther exploded offensively in the NIVC Super 16, pacing the match with 21 kills at a 34.1 hitting percentage. The outside hitter also earned two blocks, two digs and an assist. Magda Stambrowska chipped in another 10 slams and two blocks in the second-round contest.
Rashanny Solano Smith went on a tear last weekend, totaling 47 digs at 6.71 per set across the opening two rounds of the postseason tournament. The Johnnies' standout libero amassed 24 digs against North Carolina A&T and followed it up by digging out 23 balls at Virginia.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk posted her fourth double-double of the season on Sunday night inside Memorial Gymnasium. The Poland product led the match with 31 assists to go along with 10 digs, and a service ace.
St. John's is set to battle UConn (26-7, 12-6 BIG EAST) for the third time this season and the 35th time in the all-time series between the two schools. UConn rides into the NIVC Great 8 after taking down Mercer, 3-0, and East Carolina, 3-1, in the opening two rounds of the postseason.
Hanna Tylska has been a hitting machine for UConn late in the season, leading the team with 319 kills at 3.19 per set. Doga Kutlu has thrived this year, producing 1218 assists at 10.07 per set. The setter has also rung up 401 digs, 87 kills and 41 service aces.
BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year McKenna Brand serves as the Huskies libero and has racked up 493 digs at 4.07 per set, to go along with 92 assists and 26 service aces. Taylor Pannell shines on both sides of the net, as she has earned 298 slams this season with 87 total blocks.
The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the NIVC Fab Four where it will take on Bowling Green. Game time, date and location will be announced at a later date, if applicable.
