St. John’s Draws Bowling Green in NIVC Fab Four

The semifinal appearance marks the furthest the Red Storm has advanced in any national postseason tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 3-1 victory over BIG EAST rival UConn, the St. John's volleyball team draws Bowling Green on Saturday night in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Fab Four.
First serve is of the semifinal match scheduled for 7 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. The contest will be streamed on FloSports and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com. Tickets for the general public are available for $10, while tickets for seniors and children aged 12 and under will cost $5. Admission is free for St. John's students. The Red Storm (24-12, 10-8 BIG EAST) kept its postseason run alive with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 27-29, 26-24) victory over BIG EAST foe UConn in the NIVC Great Eight. With the win, the Johnnies will make an appearance in the event's Fab Four, marking the furthest round the program has advanced to in any national postseason tournament.
Erin Jones followed up her AVCA All-North Region Team selection by surpassing the 1,000-career kills threshold with her sixth kill of the match against the Huskies on Thursday. The Albuquerque, N.M., product notched her 12th double-double of the season on a match-best 15 kills and 17 digs. The junior also tallied four assists, three blocks and two service aces.
The right-side hitter has put together a special season in Queens, pacing the team with 573 points, 484 kills, 55 service aces, 4.31 points per set, 3.64 kills per set and 0.41 aces per set.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk was fantastic conducting the Red Storm's offense on Thursday, registering her second-straight and fifth double-double of the season. The standout setter logged a match-high 49 assists and 17 digs, paired with six blocks and a pair of clutch setter dumps. The senior is 39th in total assists with 1,162, nationally as of Dec. 13.
Lucrezia Lodi logged her sixth double-double of the season, digging out 11 balls and pounding 10 kills, while Magda Stambrowska slammed 12 kills at a 29.6 percent hitting clip with five total blocks. Giorgia Walther contributed 13 kills and three digs against UConn.
Rashanny Solano Smith continued her stellar postseason play on Thursday, picking up 16 digs versus the Huskies. The sophomore has recorded a team-best 503 digs, averaging 4.16 per set across 31 starts at libero this season.
As a team, the Red Storm currently ranks top-20 in the country in total assists (third), total kills (fourth), total attacks (14th).
St. John's will host Bowling Green (24-9, 16-2 MAC) in its first-ever Fab Four appearance on Saturday. The two schools will meet for the first time in over 25 years, with the Red Storm taking the only match in the all-time series, 3-1, on Sept. 18, 1998, in neutral territory. The MAC Regular Season Champions have been on a tear this postseason, taking down Binghamton, 3-1, Wright State, 3-1, and DePaul, 3-1, in the NIVC. At the end of the season, Falcon's Head Coach Danijela Tomic was named the MAC Coach of the Year while four players were tabbed to All-MAC Teams.
Conference player of the year Lauryn Hovey has been unstoppable on offense this season, leading Bowling Green with 516 points and 415 kills. The junior has also registered 308 digs, 90 blocks and a team-best 54 aces.
Amanda Otton is the Falcon's setter and has racked up 1097 assists at 9.46 per frame. Alexis Mettille and Jessica Andrews are Bowling Green's block leaders. Andrews paces the team with 150 total rejections, including 22 solo swats, while Mettille has recorded 134 blocks in addition to 243 kills.
The victor of Saturday's contest will advance to the NIVC Championship where it will take on Arizona. Game time, date and location will be announced at a later date, if applicable.
