St. John’s Hosts DePaul in BIG EAST Opener on Tuesday

QUEENS, N.Y. – After earning its third-straight win with a 22-point victory over Bryant last week, the St. John's men's basketball team (8-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) will close out its four-game homestand and open BIG EAST action on Tuesday against DePaul (8-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) at Carnesecca Arena.
Tip-off from Queens is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Peacock will carry Tuesday's live telecast with Noah Eagle and Donny Marshall on the call from Queens.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 381 and via the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm earned 50 votes in the latest Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll following an 99-77 win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday in Queens. Junior forward Zuby Ejiofor led five Red Storm players in double figures with 22 points and 10 boards for his fourth double double of the season.
Through 10 games, St. John's has emerged as the conference's most efficient second half team, averaging a BIG EAST-leading 44.6 points per game and outscoring its opponents by +9.9 points in the later stanza. The Red Storm has also pulled down a league-best 9.6 offensive boards and 23.3 total rebounds per contest in the final 20 minutes of action. RJ Luis Jr. (9.3 ppg) and Ejiofor (8.3 ppg) rank among the top 10 in the BIG EAST in scoring average in the second half, sitting fifth and 10th in the league, respectively. Ejiofor is also leading the conference with 5.1 rebounds per game in the final stanza, including 3.2 coming on the offensive glass.
St. John's enters Tuesday's contest looking for its fourth-straight victory in BIG EAST openers. Last season, the Johnnies rolled to an 81-66 victory over Xavier behind an 18-point, 14-rebound, six-block and five-assist effort from Joel Soriano on Dec. 20 at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm swept the regular season series with the Blue Demons last season. St. John's has also won six of the last seven contests against DePaul, including a 104-77 victory at Wintrust Arena on March 4, 2024. Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle each scored a team-high 19 points and shot a combined 16-for-21 from the field.
DePaul is off to a hot start under first-year Head Coach Chris Holtmann, starting the season with seven straight wins before cooling off with a 1-2 stretch over its last three games. The Blue Demons snapped a two-game skid with a program-record 17 made 3-pointers in a 91-72 victory over Wichita State on Saturday. Jacob Meyer (23 points), CJ Gunn (22 points) and Isaiah Rivera (17 points) combined for 13 triples in the win.
The Blue Demons rank among the nation's best averaging 12.8 3-pointers and 19.9 assists per game, good for second and fifth in Division I, respectively. Redshirt junior guard Conor Enright stands sixth in the country with 7.5 assists per game. The Drake transfer is shooting 46.7 percent from distance good for third in the conference and 27th in the nation. Rivera ranks right behind his fellow guard with a 46.6 percent shooting mark from behind the arc, which is fourth in the BIG EAST and 30th in Division I.
Following Tuesday's game, the Red Storm will continue conference play at Providence (7-5, 1-0) in a primetime matchup inside Amica Mutual Pavilion on Friday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. with the national telecast airing on FOX.
