RV/RV St. John’s to Welcome Kansas State in Big 12 – BIG EAST Battle

The Red Storm men’s basketball program will honor the life and legacy of the late Lou Carnesecca throughout Saturday’s contest with the Wildcats
QUEENS, N.Y. – The RV/RV St. John's men's basketball team (6-2) will welcome Kansas State (6-2) to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday for the latest edition of the Big 12 – BIG EAST Battle.
Tip-off from Queens is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. FOX will carry Saturday's live telecast with Brandon Gaudin and Donny Marshall on the call from Queens.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Tarik Turner will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriuxXM radio channel 83, FOX Sports Radio, and via the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm will continue to honor the life and legacy of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and longtime Head Coach Lou Carnesecca during its basketball games this weekend. Carnesecca passed away peacefully on Nov. 30 at the age of 99. St. John's Athletics will host 'A Tribute to Coach Carnesecca' for its men's basketball contest with Kansas State on Saturday and women's basketball game with Wake Forest on Sunday. Both programs will wear "Lou" patches on their jerseys for the remainder of the season.
Fans in attendance for both contests this weekend will receive a commemorative Lou Carnesecca 526 pin in recognition of his all-time win total as well as a keepsake that features a custom illustration and career highlights of St. John's legendary head coach. The Johnnies will also wear 526 shooting shirts and a special court decal will be installed in honor of Coach Carnesecca. Coach Carnesecca's reserved seat in Section 7, Row JJ, Seat 3 will also remain empty as a tribute to the Hall of Famer, a section where he was a fixture for numerous games following his retirement in 1992.
The Johnnies have emerged victorious in nine straight games inside Carnesecca Arena, most recently earning a 77-64 win over Harvard on Nov. 30. Over its last nine victories at its on-campus home, St. John's has averaged 84.9 points on 48.7 percent shooting (289-594 FG) to go with 43.6 rebounds and 18.1 assists per game. Defensively, the Red Storm has held opponents to 60.7 points while forcing 15.4 turnovers per contest.
Furthermore, the Johnnies have won 34 straight non-conference games inside Carnesecca Arena dating back to a loss against Vermont on Nov. 16, 2019. The 34-game win streak against out-of-conference opponents in Queens is the second longest since setting the program record with 62 wins from Nov. 28, 1981 to Nov. 18, 1993.
Last season, the Johnnies evened their record at 2-2 in the Big 12 – BIG EAST Battle with a 79-73 win at West Virginia on Dec. 1. Red Storm center Joel Soriano posted 24 points to go with nine boards and three blocks. The annual event between conferences is also evenly split at three apiece.
The Red Storm and Wildcats will also square off for the first time since St. John's secured a 72-65 win on Dec. 10, 1965. Led by first year Head Coach Lou Carnesecca, St. John's Hall of Famers Sonny Dove and Ken McIntyre scored 27 and 22 points, respectively, in the victory over the Wildcats as part of the Sunflower Doubleheader at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.
Kansas State is fresh off setting a school single-game scoring record in its last outing on Sunday with a 120-73 win over the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. Six Wildcats reached in double figures as senior wing Achor Achor logged 21 points. K-State also drained 21 3-pointers, two shy of the program record of 23 set in 1994.
The Wildcats enter Saturday's contest averaging 81.6 points per game on 49.0 percent shooting. Jerome Tang's team has converted at a 38.2 percent rate from 3-point range, averaging 9.9 triples per game, good for top 50 in the nation (49th).
Dug McDaniel is among the country's leading defenders with 3.0 steals per game, a figure that ranks sixth in the NCAA Division I. The junior guard is also one of the top distributors with 5.9 assists per game, good for 26th in the nation.
