The Red Storm is coming off an 80-66 victory over then-No. 15/15 Creighton on Sunday inside Madison Square Garden. St. John's point guard Daniss Jenkins scored 27 points and dished out six assists while backcourt mate Jordan Dingle finished with 18 points, shooting 8-for-10 inside the 3-point arc.
In one of the team's top offensive performances of the season, St. John's tallied 24 assists and committed just three turnovers against the Bluejays. It marked just the sixth time in the last 25 years that the Red Storm recorded 24 or more assists in a BIG EAST game. The team's +8.0 assist-to-turnover ratio was the best since the opening round of the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament when the Johnnies registered 22 assists with only two turnovers in a 92-73 victory over DePaul on March 9, 2022. Jenkins and Glenn Taylor Jr. each recorded a game-high six assists while Red Storm centers Joel Soriano and Zuby Ejiofor registered five and four assists, respectively.
Over its last two wins at Georgetown and against the Bluejays, the Red Storm has averaged 85.0 points and has shot 51.9 percent from the field. Jenkins has averaged team-highs with 21.0 points and 5.5 assists to go with 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. For his efforts, the graduate student from Dallas was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the third time this season.
St. John's and Butler will square off for the 24th time in series history on Wednesday. St. John's holds a slight 12-11 advantage all-time against the Bulldogs and has won five of the last six contests. The Johnnies last victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse was on Feb. 5, 2022, when Julian Champagnie led St. John's with 21 points and eight rebounds.
In the first meeting with Butler this season, the Johnnies earned an 86-70 victory on Jan. 2 at Carnesecca Arena. Jenkins finished with 17 points and seven assists. Soriano (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Chris Ledlum (13 points, 11 rebounds) each posted double-doubles. RJ Luis Jr. and Brady Dunlap recorded 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
Butler has dropped its last four games, including a 76-64 setback on Saturday at Seton Hall. The Bulldogs hit 12 3-pointers against the Pirates but committed 16 turnovers. Jalen Thomas led the team with 12 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds.
