St. John’s Falls to Georgetown in BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal, 53-44

Jillian Archer tied for a game-high with 16 points
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (March 10, 2024) – The third-seeded St. John's women's basketball team fell to sixth-seeded Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal, 53-44.
The Red Storm trimmed the deficit to as few as three in the fourth quarter but were outlasted by the Hoyas down the stretch.
Jillian Archer finished tied for a game-high 16 points on 5-of-9 (55.6%) shooting. The graduate student was strong offensively down the stretch of the season finishing in double-figures in 12 of her last 14 games.
Unique Drake was the other Red Storm player to finish in double-figures ending the contest with 10 points and went 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Ber'Nyah Mayo added seven points and Skye Owen chipped in six at Mohegan Sun Arena late Saturday night.
St. John's (17-14, 11-7 BIG EAST) shot well from the charity stripe converting on 85.7 (12-14) of its attempts.
Georgetown's Kelsey Ransom and Garceann Bennett combined for 39 of the Hoyas' 53 points.
Georgetown started hot jumping out a 10-0 lead after Kelsey Ransom buried a triple from the top of the key to force a St. John's timeout. Owen got the Johnnies on the board with a pull-up mid-range jumper. Drake added a triple to make it 10-5. The Hoyas spurred off a 7-0 spurt before Archer tallied the final bucket banking in a long-two to trail by 10 after the opening frame, 17-7.
Jailah Donald flushed a long two-point shot to open the second half scoring as the two continued to battled in a defensive-minded first half. Owen rattled home a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to single-digits, 25-16, after the opening half.
In the second half, the Red Storm wasted little time jumping right back into it. After Archer sunk a mid-range from the baseline on a feed from Phoenix Gedeon. An Archer block turned into offense as Drake nailed a transition jumper to cut the halftime time deficit in half just 1:04 into the third stanza. With 6:18 remaining in the third, Donald pulled down a defensive board and fired a long pass to Mayo, who dumped it off to Archer for an easy bucket and trimmed the Hoyas' lead to just three, 27-24. The two squads to continued in a physical battle as Archer fought for an offensive board and got the putback to go. The forward finished with eight points in the third frame. Mayo got the final basket of the third to go to make it a five-point game, 35-30, heading into the final quarter.

St. John's never got closer than eight and the Hoyas expanded their lead to as many as 14 with 0:56 to play. Mayo rattled home a triple and Archer finished inside to end the game on a 5-0 spurt but the deficit was too much to overcome.
