No. 6 St. John’s Defeats No. 11 Providence, 4-1, in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament Presented by Jeep

The Red Storm will face No. 3 Georgetown on Friday in the quarterfinals
CAYCE, S.C. (April 18, 2024) – The No. 6 St. John's women's tennis team defeated No. 11 Providence, 4-1, in the first round of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP on Thursday morning.
The Red Storm move on to face third-seeded Georgetown on Friday afternoon in the tournament's quarterfinals. The Johnnies have advanced to the quarterfinal round every year since 2014.
The Red Storm (9-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) won the team doubles point and took three singles matches to clinch the victory at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
In doubles play, Noemi Babikova and Alicia Gomez dominated Lauren Carson and Elisa Davalos, 6-0 on the No. 2 court.
Mouna Bouzgarrou and Arina Gumerova picked up a 6-1 win on the No. 1 court over Vannelie Melendez and Liria Loria to claim the team point for St. John's. The reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week has won five straight matches as a pair, all from the first doubles position.
In singles play, Providence grabbed a point on the No. 6 court, but Babikova's convincing 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Melendez on the No. 4 court gave St. John's a 2-1 advantage. The lead was pushed to three on the No. 5 court when Gomez took down Liria Loria in the fifth position, 6-3, 6-1.
Bouzgarrou earned the match-clinching fourth point for the Red Storm on the No. 1 court, defeating Camila Barrera Aguirre, 6-1, 6-1.
The Johnnies improve to 17-0 all-time against the Friars.
Friday's quarterfinal matchup with the Hoyas will start at 4:45 p.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. The Red Storm lead the all-time series with Georgetown,15-0. When the two schools last squared off in last year's BIG EAST Tournament, the Johnnies defeated the Hoyas 4-0. This will be the third meeting in tournament play between the two longtime BIG EAST foes.
