QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Athletic Department reflected on a stellar year of accomplishments during its annual awards celebration on Tuesday night. The 78th edition of the awards banquet celebrated another successful year for the Red Storm both on and off the field of competition.
The evening began with mass led by Campus Minister for Athletics, Fr. Richard Rock C. M. at St. Thomas More Church. Following the mass, Director of Athletics Mike Cragg kicked off the awards celebration with introductory remarks, followed by a greeting from St. John's University President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., both addressing the crowd of student-athletes and recognizing the many distinguished guests in attendance.
Following dinner, Co-Masters of Ceremony Senior Associate Athletic Director Kristin Quinn and Senior Director of Academic Support for Student-Athletes Ray Howell introduced the winners of various team and special recognition awards.
Nine special recognition awards were presented to acknowledge those athletes, coaches and staff members who have gone above and beyond the sport in their most recent season. Additionally, 20 individuals were recognized by their teams and three individuals were celebrated for their accomplishments with the spirit programs.
The Herbert V. Hess Award, which is given to a coach who during the year demonstrates honesty, integrity and concern for his student-athletes, was presented to the Red Storm's Aliann Pompey for the first time in her career. Pompey, who is the Director of St. John's Track & Field/Cross Country, secured the program's first Metropolitan Cross Country Championship in October. Her indoor track & field team also captured two individual titles and the sprint medley team set a new program record at the Penn Relays last week.

Those awards were given to men's soccer's leading goal scorer Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau and women's soccer All-American Jessica Garziano. Sean Rice of lacrosse was named the John DaSilva Memorial Award recipient, an honor bestowed upon a deserving student-athlete who exhibits courage, persistence and fortitude.
Each year, St. John's celebrates a team manager who has played a significant role for his or her sport. This year's James Kevin Beatty Memorial winner was presented to Reyheim Jackson for his dedication to the baseball program.
