AUSTIN, Texas– St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen finished out the NCAA Austin Regional on Wednesday afternoon.
The junior tallied a 4-over, 75, in the final round at University of Texas Golf Club. He finished the tournament with a cumulative score 9-over, 222, to tie for 50th place against top competition from across the country. Over the three rounds, the team captain logged rounds 73-74-75 in Austin.
Texas, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Utah and Wake Forest were the top-five finishers and will advance to the NCAA Finals in Carlsbad, Calif. on May 24-29. UNC Greensboro's Kelvin Hernandez was the low individual at 6-under not on those teams and also punched his ticket.
The All-BIG EAST selection was stellar on the par-5's this week. He recorded six birdies and nine attempts and logged a 4.44 stroke average on the course's longest holes.
Chen started off strong with a birdie on the first hole of the morning. After his tee shot found the fairway, his iron shot landed on the green to set up for a 10-footer. After a pair of bogeys, he climbed back to even for the day after sinking a birdie putt on the fifth hole.
On the par-3 eighth hole, the Beijing, China native began a streak of six consecutive pars. Coming down the stretch one some of the most difficult holes he recorded three pars over the final holes to close out the tournament at 9-over, 222.
Chen ends his junior campaign as the BIG EAST Individual Champion, an All-BIG EAST selection, logged six top-10 finishes and became the second-straight Johnnie to compete at NCAA Regionals. The St. John's men's golf squad will be back in action in September for the 2024-25 campaign.
