QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's fencing team, along with the entire athletic department and university family, mourns the passing of Maksym Kariuchenko.
"We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Maksym's family and friends," interim Director of Athletics John Diffley said. "Maksym was a high-level competitor and a valuable member of our university community and our athletics family. He will truly be missed."
A four-year letterwinner (2019-23) from Kharkiv, Ukraine, Kariuchenko collected 41 wins in the men's epee during his tenure. The 2024 St. John's graduate, who finished his bachelor's degree in cyber security, capped off his junior season with a 14th-place finish in the NCAA Northeast Regional, becoming one of four Johnnies to place inside the top 15.
Kariuchenko also served as an intern for the New Jersey Courts, handling cyber security issues among other responsibilities remotely.
Prior to his arrival in Queens, Kariuchenko secured first place in the 2017 U17 World Cup held in Turkey. He also served as the captain of the Ukrainian National Youth Team from 2017-19.
