Four Johnnies Earn Women’s Soccer BIG EAST Honors

Bower named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Hope Van Tuyle tabbed Rookie of the Week
NEW YORK– Four St. John's women's soccer players garnered BIG EAST honors, the conference office announced on Monday.
Kayla Bower was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week while Hope Van Tuyle was tabbed Rookie of the Week. Jailene DeJesus and Athina Sofroniou were tabbed to the conference's honor roll following a 2-0 week for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies' attack exploded in wins over a pair of Ivy League opponents in Cornell and Penn. The Red Storm tallied six goals and eight assists during the 2-0 week.
Van Tuyle earns her first-ever recognition from the conference after a strong week off the bench. In Sunday's 2-1 road win at Penn, the Leesburg, Va., native scored her first collegiate goal bashing in a rebound off the crossbar in the 28th minute at Rhodes Field.
Bower was named the league's top goalkeeper after logging a pair of wins in between the pipes. The junior played 122 minutes allowing just one goal and made six saves across the two matches. On the year. On the year, the Lincoln Park, N.J., native boasts a save percentage of .900 and a GAA of 0.42 while adding two combined shutouts.
DeJesus had a stellar week recording five points (2 goals, 1 assist) during a 2-0 week for the Red Storm. The midfielder logged 10 shots with seven on frame including a career-high seven strike attempts on Sunday at Penn.
The Wyomissing, Pa., native extended the Red Storm lead cutting past the keeper in the 55th minute for St. John's fourth goal of the evening against Cornell on Thursday. DeJesus followed it up on Sunday with the decisive penalty burying her first-ever attempt from the spot in the 52nd minute to down the Quakers.
Sofroniou padded the stat sheet with three assists on the week, including two free kicks from nearly half field. The defender recorded a career-high two assists the win over Cornell. At Rhodes Field, the team captain delivered of long-ball off a set piece that Freya Meadows-Tuson headed off the crossbar leading to Van Tuyle's tally.
Sofroniou ranks second on the team in points (5) and has led the Red Storm defensively to four shutouts playing all 720 minutes.
St. John's will head into BIG EAST play on Sunday when it hosts UConn at Belson Stadium on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
