Athina Sofroniou Named TopDrawer Soccer National Team of the Week Honorable Mention

Sofroniou recorded three assists during a 2-0 week for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's soccer defender Athina Sofroniou was named TopDrawer Soccer National Team of the Week Honorable Mention on Tuesday morning.
The senior had a stellar week for the Red Storm during a 2-0 week where it captured victories over a pair of Ivy League opponents in Penn and Harvard. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native recorded three assists over the two wins.
The honor marks the first national team of the week recognition for the Long Island product. On Monday, Sofroniou was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, marking her third conference selection of the season.
Sofroniou padded the stat sheet with three assists on the week, including two free kicks from nearly half field. The defender recorded a career-high two assists in the win over Cornell. At Rhodes Field against Penn on Sunday, the team captain delivered a long-ball off a set piece that Freya Meadows-Tuson headed off the crossbar, leading to Hope Van Tuyle's tally.
She currently ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in total assists (3) and scored a goal to equalize against Towson on Aug. 22.
Sofroniou ranks second on the team in points (5) and has led the Red Storm defensively to four shutouts conceding just three goals on the year. The backline staple has played every minute in 11 of the last 13 matches.
St. John's will head into BIG EAST play on Sunday with a 5-1-2 record when it hosts UConn at Belson Stadium on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
