St. John’s to Host Fairfield on Wednesday

The Red Storm is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Penn State Invitational
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2024) – Following a 2-1 showing at the Penn State Invitational last weekend, the St. John's volleyball team will play host to Fairfield on Wednesday at 6 p.m., inside Carnesecca Arena. The match will be streamed on FloSports with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm went 2-1 at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa., this past weekend. The Johnnies pulled off their second reverse sweep in seven days when they took down Princeton, 3-2, on Friday, before besting Duke, 3-1, and falling to No. 3 Penn State, 3-0, on Saturday. After the tournament, the Red Storm now sits at 7-3 on the season.
Erin Jones was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after being selected to the Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team on Saturday night. The Albuquerque, N.M., native continued to dazzle in her junior season, racking up 39 kills, 41 assists, 26 digs and 11 blocks across the tournament.
Jones registered the second triple-double in program history and of her career with 13 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs against Princeton last Friday. The right-side hitter also tacked on a career-high five blocks in the match.
The junior posted her third double-double of the season against Duke on Saturday afternoon, off 12 kills and 11 digs to go along with six helpers and three blocks. Jones currently leads the Red Storm in points (164) for 21st in the nation and kills (136) for 35th nationally.
Giorgia Walther joined Jones on the Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team, lighting up the stat sheet with 42 kills, 13 digs, five blocks and four aces across the weekend. The Italy product tallied a season-high 25 kills at a 38.6 percent hitting clip with six digs, four blocks and an ace in the Johnnies' 3-1 win over Duke.
The senior's 151.5 points rank 45th in the nation and her 131 kills check in at 49th as of Sept. 17.
Ana Benjamim impressed in her first career start against No. 3 Penn State, as she logged a season-high nine kills, four digs, an assist and a service ace against the Nittany Lions.
As a team, St. John's is 11th on the national stage in total assists (472), 12th in total kills (502) and 31st in total blocks (86.5).
St. John's and Fairfield will square off for the 11th time in the all-time series on Wednesday and for the first time since they met in Connecticut on Sept. 7, 2022. Additionally, the Stags will return to Carnesecca Arena for the first time since the 2017 season.
The Red Storm leads the all-time series, 6-4, and will look to snap a three-match skid against Fairfield dating back to Sept. 1, 2007.
The Stags will visit Queens with a 2-7 record after going 0-3 at the Yale Invitational last weekend, falling to Colgate, 3-1, Yale, 3-2, and Villanova, 3-1. The Stags' two wins are over Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1, and Central Connecticut State, 3-0.
Fairfield returns nearly an identical roster from its NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023, bringing back 12 of 14 players. Mamie Krubally leads the offense for the Stags as she has registered 80 kills, averaging 2.42 per set with 10 blocks and 10 digs.
Maya Walker is Fairfield's leader in blocks and has posted a team-high 21 total rejections. The junior has also pounded 72 kills and has earned 83 points.
