Red Storm and Musketeers to open conference action for third time in six years
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off its second draw against a ranked opponent this season, the St. John's men's soccer team will visit Xavier for the start of BIG EAST action at Corcoran Field on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. The conference opener will be streamed on FloFC and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies (2-2-3) battled to a 1-1 draw against No. 6 Marshall on Saturday, marking the fourth-straight tie against a ranked opponent. BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection Tyler Morck netted his first collegiate goal against The Herd. The redshirt freshman knocked in the equalizer off a headed pass from Thomas Lamaille that came on a cross from Julian Jakopovic in the 67th minute. Lamaille is currently tied for third in the BIG EAST and ranks 41st in the nation with three assists through seven games.
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur will look to become the seventh men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 400-win plateau with a singular Division I program. The 34-year head coach of St. John's, who sits with 399 victories in Queens, will also be the second active Division I head coach to reach the milestone with a win on Friday, joining Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (430). The Johnnies are also closing in on 500 triumphs as a program, sitting with 498 victories entering Tuesday's slate.
Friday's matchup will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the Johnnies and Musketeers. The Red Storm is unbeaten in its last five matchups with Xavier, going 3-0-2 since 2017. Due to the BIG EAST splitting the conference into two divisions, St. John's and Xavier will square off for the first time since a 0-0 draw at Belson Stadium on Oct. 5, 2022.
The Red Storm will open conference play against the Musketeers for the third time in the last six seasons, having won the previous two meetings with a 3-1 victory at the Musketeers on Sept. 18, 2019, and a 1-0 win at home on Sept. 18. 2021.
Xavier enters Friday's slate on the heels of a scoreless draw at Siena on Sept. 13. The Musketeers held a 10-3 advantage in shots, marking the third time the team has held the opposition to three shots or less in a match this season. Jonny Mennell picked up his conference-leading third shutout of the year, good for 10th in the nation.
The defending BIG EAST Champions are fifth in the league and 40th in the nation with a 1.00 goals against average.
The Musketeers will turn to former University of North Carolina product Matthew Senanou on offense after producing three goals through seven contests. He is also one of four Xavier players to score multiple goals this season, joining Jabari De Coteau, Dylan Kropp and Ernest Mensah Jr., who all have two strikes.
The Red Storm will return to Queens to take on Penn State at Belson Stadium on Tuesday. The Johnnies are 2-0 when playing host to the Nittany Lions. St. John's earned a 1-0 victory against Penn State in its last meeting at Belson on Sept. 8, 2013, on a game-winner strike by Casey Osborne off an assist from Tim Parker.
