St. John’s Welcomes UConn for BIG EAST Opener on Sunday

Red Storm hold a 4-0-1 record over its last five matches
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team will open BIG EAST play on Sunday afternoon when it hosts UConn for a 1 p.m. contest at Belson Stadium.

The Red Storm will welcome back its women's soccer alumni for Sunday's match as 2023 St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Diana Poulin will be honored before the game.
The Johnnies enter league competition after concluding non-conference play with a 5-1-2 record. Over its last five matches the squad boasts a 4-0-1 mark and remains unbeaten at home.
In its last time on the pitch, St. John's picked up a 2-1 road win at Penn on Sunday. The Red Storm were fueled by Hope Van Tuyle's first collegiate goal and a converted penalty kick from Jailene DeJesus at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia.
Four players earned weekly honors after a pair of wins over Ivy League opponents. After her first-ever goal Van Tuyle was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. The forward became the first St. John's freshman to earn the honor since Ava Collins on March 22, 2021. Kayla Bower was tabbed the league's goalkeeper of the week. The junior netminder allowed one goal in 122 minutes of action across two matches against Cornell and Penn tallying seven saves. On the year, the Lincoln Park, N.J., product holds a GAA pf 0.42 and a save percentage of .900.
In addition to its two conference players of the week, DeJesus and Athina Sofroniou were named to the BIG EAST Week Honor Roll on Monday. DeJesus packed a major offensive punch registering two goals and an assist (5 points) in the pair of wins. The senior winger tallied the game-winner against the Quakers sending home a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Sofroniou garnered attention after recording three assists last week and was also named TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week Honorable Mention. The defender tallied a career-high two helpers against Cornell and another off a free kick at Penn. On the season, the center back is the only Johnnie to play all 720 minutes and has guided a defensive unit that ranks first in the BIG EAST and 23rd in NCAA Division I in GAA (0.50).

UConn comes into the match on a hot streak rattling off six-straight victories and hold a 6-1-1 record on the year. After starting the campaign, 0-1-1 the Huskies have been rolling since highlighted by its most recent victory a 6-0 thrashing of Texas A&M in Storrs.
UConn is led by All-American Chioma Okafor, who leads the conference with six goals and 14 points. Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Kaitlyn Mahoney leads the league with three shutouts on the year.
Sunday's match marks the 29th meeting between the two programs with the Huskies leading the all-time series, 17-9-2. In recent history, St. John's has held the upper-hand in the series taking three of the last four meetings. Last year at Morrone Stadium, Jessica Garziano equalized in the 88th minute before UConn's Abbey Jones responded 0:22 later to make it, 2-1. In the last meeting at Belson in 2022, the Red Storm outlasted the Huskies in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals.
