St. John’s Heads to California for San Diego Invitational

Red Storm to face San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and No. 16 Arizona State in first road swing
QUEENS, N.Y. – After starting off the season undefeated at home, the St. John's volleyball team will hit the road for the first time this season when it competes in the San Diego Invitational this weekend in California.
The Red Storm will kick off the tournament on Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. ET when it battles host school, San Diego. The next day, the Johnnies will square off with UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. ET. St. John's will close out the San Diego Invitational against No. 16 Arizona State at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Red Storm's match against San Diego will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats for all three matches will be available on usdtoreros.com.
The Johnnies are off to a 3-0 start after taking down, Niagara, Northeastern, and Coppin State, en route to a Red Storm Invitational Championship. During its three convincing victories, St. John's outscored its opponents, 9-2, and held them to a 9.6 hitting percentage which ranks atop the BIG EAST and 12th nationally as of Sept. 4.
Erin Jones picked up her season right where she left off in 2023 and was named the Red Storm Invitational MVP and tabbed to the inaugural BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Across the opening weekend of play, the tournament MVP recorded 33 kills at a 34.4 percent clip, 32 digs, five aces and five total blocks. The junior notched her first double-double of the season against Northeastern on Friday night with a match-high 15 kills at a 50 percent hitting rate and 16 digs.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk joined Jones on the conference's weekly honor roll, marking the third time in her career that she's been named to the list. The setter dominated at the Red Storm's first home tournament totaling 119 assists averaging 10.82 per set, which ranks top-30 in NCAA Division I. Additionally, the Poland native contributed 18 digs, 10 total rejections, eight kills and four aces. The senior led the Johnnies in assists in all three matches, totaling 29 (Niagara), 39 (Northeastern) and 51 (Coppin State).
Lucrezia Lodi and Magda Stambrowska also had strong starts to the year and were selected for the Red Storm Invitational All-Tournament Team. Lodi registered 33 kills and 29 digs throughout the opening weekend of play. Stambrowska helped power the Johnnies to a perfect start in their home invitational, putting up 23 kills at an efficient 44.2 hitting percentage.
The program will make its first-ever visit to San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday. The Red Storm and Toreros previously met in Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sept. 1, 2019, where the Toreros claimed a straight-set victory.

WCC Preseason Team selection Haylee Stoner tallied seven blocks and 11 kills to open the season in Hawaii. Last year, the senior racked up 153 kills and 96 total blocks. Freshman Kennedy Osunsanmi starred last weekend, as she rang up 24 kills on a 31.7 percent clip with 13 digs and eight blocks.
UC Santa Barbara enters the San Diego Invitational with a 1-2 record after facing a pair of ranked opponents at the Florida State Invitational. The Gauchos' sole win came against USF, 3-1, while it fell to No. 25 Georgia and No. 20 Florida State. The 2023 Big West Champions return All-Big West Second Team honoree Andi Kreiling. A mainstay up front for UCSB, Kreiling started off the 2024 season hot, notching 12 total swats and 23 kills at a 37.2 success rate in Tallahassee, Florida.
Arizona State travels to San Diego ranked 16 in the country after going 3-0 at the LUV Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. The Sun Devils took down Butler, Lipscomb and Cal Baptist to open its season. Arizona State advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 last year and return 2023 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention selection Claire Jeter. The Sun Devils added Washington State transfer and 2023 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention Argentina Ung at setter.
