Nielsen helped combined for two clean sheets; while Sylvestre record a pair assists against UAlbany
NEW YORK– Malene Nielsen and Janelle Sylvestre were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced on Monday.
The pair were key contributors during a 1-0-1 week for the Red Storm as it logged a 2-0 win over UAlbany and a scoreless draw with unbeaten Monmouth.
Nielsen has made an instant impact in between the pipes after transferring in from Louisville. The senior has played in all six matches and boasts a goals against average (GAA) of 0.40 and a save percentage of .865. The Denmark native ranks 26th in the country in both of those statistical categories.
This past week, Nielsen played a pivotal role in a stout defensive effort combining with teammate Kayla Bower for a pair of shutouts at home. Nielsen played the second half in each contest and recorded four stops against Monmouth, an attack that was averaging 2.7 goals per game heading into Sunday's match. The former NEC Goalkeeper of the Year at FDU has registered 17 saves for the Red Storm this season.
As a unit, the Johnnies rank 14th in the nation in GAA with an impressive mark of 0.33. The Red Storm have conceded just twice on the year and have not allowed a goal in 351 consecutive minutes dating back to the ninth minute at Yale on Aug. 28.
Sylvestre burst onto the scene this week providing a boost off the bench for St. John's. The Hamilton, Ontario, Canada native recorded a pair of assists in the victory over UAlbany on Thursday night. The winger provided helpers on goals by Jordyn Levy and Emily Riggins and became the first St. John's freshman to tally multiple assists in a game since Ava Collins on Feb. 21, 2021.
Additionally, she tallied a season-high six shots against the Great Danes as the Red Storm strung together a 37-strike outing, its highest in at least two decades. In Sunday's draw with the Hawks, the rookie recorded a pair of shots including one on target at Belson Stadium.
On the year, Sylvestre has made five appearances and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST averaging 0.4 assists per contests. The midfielder led the team this week with eight shots attempts.
The Red Storm will close out its four-match homestand on Thursday night when it welcomes Cornell for a 7 p.m. contest.
