QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team (4-3-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) will travel to take on No. 19 Akron (7-2-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Johnnies will face their fourth opponent nationally ranked in the opponent of the season on Friday. Akron checked in at No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll on Tuesday, marking the third top-20 opponent the Johnnies have seen in the last five weeks. The Red Storm is 0-0-2 against top-20 opponents after logging back-to-back draws against then-No. 2 Marshall (Sept. 5) and at then-No. 5 Wake Forest (Aug. 31).
The Red Storm is coming off a 2-0 defeat at Georgetown last Saturday night in the nation's capital. The Hoyas added a pair of goals in the opening half before the Red Storm outshot Georgetown, 7-2, over the final 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan matched his St. John's career-best with six saves at Shaw Field. The senior has recorded 0.98 goals against average and racked up three shutouts in eight starts this season.
The Red Storm have heavily outshot the opposition this season, 136-67. In the BIG EAST opener, the Red Storm dominated Xavier on Sept. 19 in the shot category, 27-4, marking its highest strike total since the program unleashed 34 at Villanova on Oct. 14, 2023. The Red Storm have turned in more shots than the opponent in nine out of its 10 matches this season.
The Red Storm is unbeaten against the Zips heading into the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs. St. John's leads the series 2-0-3 and will make its first visit to Akron since 2012. In the last meeting between the two programs after the Zips joined the BIG EAST Conference for men's soccer two years ago, the two battled to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 23, 2023 in a match that featured three red cards.
Akron enters the match with a 7-2-1 overall record and winners of two straight, including a 3-0 upset over then-No. 8 Saint Louis last week. The Zips have one of the best defensive units in college soccer allowing just four goals through 10 matches. Preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Mitch Budler leads NCAA Division I with eight shutouts on the year.
Following Friday's match, the Johnnies will be back action at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium when they host to fellow 2024 Co-BIG EAST East Division Champion Providence on Oct. 11.
