The Red Storm compete at Providence and UConn over the weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team hits the road for its first pair of conference road matches this weekend. The Red Storm (4-11, 0-2 BIG EAST) travel north to take on Providence (9-6, 0-2 BIG EAST) in Rhode Island on Friday evening at 5 p.m. The following day, the Johnnies will make their way to Storrs, Conn., for a Saturday afternoon match with UConn (11-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) at 4 p.m.
This is the 34th overall meeting between Providence and St. John's, and the 36th all time meeting for the Johnnies and Huskies. Friday's match will be streamed on Friars Live and Saturday's airs on ESPN+.
The Johnnies kick off the October slate following a pair of losses at home to Villanova and Georgetown last weekend. On Friday night, St. John's pushed Villanova to five sets in a tightly contested battle that featured 23 ties and nine lead changes. Senior Erin Jones tied her career-high with 23 kills and added 14 digs for her third double-double of the season. Despite setting a season-high 11 blocks and a strong fourth-set rally to force a decisive fifth frame, the Johnnies ultimately fell, 3-2. The Red Storm faced off with Georgetown the following day, falling in straight sets to the Hoyas.
Just one week into conference play, three different Johnnies appear in the top-10 of five different statistical categories. Jones is slotted sixth in hitting percentage and fourth in kills per set, while Rashanny Solano Smith is second in total service aces and ninth in digs per set. Martina Capponcelli ranks seventh in assists per set.
Providence boasts the best defensive unit in the conference with an overall record of 9-6. As a team, the Friars lead the BIG EAST in both defensive categories, averaging 2.57 blocks per set and 15.25 digs per set. Redshirt Senior Hadley Pride currently ranks second in NCAA Division I in digs per set, averaging 5.64. Pride's 299 total digs check in at fifth in the nation, and both marks sit atop the BIG EAST ranks. Junior Lyric Berry sits in eighth place in Division I with 75 total blocks. She is tied for eighth in the country in the solo blocks category. Berry's 1.42 blocks per set is the top mark in the league. The Friars currently hold a 6-1 home record, the only blemish coming on a five-set loss to Bryant on Sept. 6.
UConn enters the weekend with an 11-3 overall record. The Huskies begin BIG EAST play undefeated at home, with a perfect 7-0 record in Storrs. Last weekend UConn dropped both of their contests at DePaul and Marquette, marking the first time this season that it dropped consecutive matches. Senior Emma Werkmeister paces the Huskies offense averaging 3.67 kills per set, which sits sixth in the BIG EAST. Grad student Doga Kutlu has recorded 454 total assists thus far, averaging 8.73 assists per set.
Following this weekend, the Red Storm will begin a three-game homestand. St. John's will host DePaul on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and Marquette the following day at 5 p.m. The homestand closes out with a midday matinee against Seton Hall on Oct. 14. First serve against the Pirates is set for 12 p.m.
