The former Johnnie setter to play in Poland’s top professional league
QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's volleyball setter Wiktoria Kowalczyk recently signed a professional contract in the top professional volleyball league in Poland, the Tauron Liga. The Warsaw, Poland native, will play for ŁKS Commercecon Łódź.
"We are very excited for Wiktoria and the next part of her volleyball journey," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "She certainly has left her mark at St. John's, helping the program reach the BIG EAST title match in 2023 and most recently our 2024 NIVC Fab Four run. She is resilient, strong, smart and competitive person, and a great teammate."
Kowalczyk, who graduated from St. John's back in May, wrapped up her career in Queens with 3,953 assists, good enough for fifth in program history.
She recorded three consecutive 1,000 assists seasons, leading St. John's in assists from 2022-24. During the 2022 season, she finished with a career-high 1,299 across 34 matches. Her best match as a member of the Red Storm came against Appalachian State, where she notched 63 assists in a 3-2 victory on Aug. 27, 2022.
In 2023, the setter dished out 1,084 assists, enroute to pacing the Johnnies to their most recent BIG EAST title match appearance- the first time since winning the crown in 2019. Despite falling short, St. John's picked up a bid to the NIVC Tournament, where Kowalczyk recorded a match-high 26 assists in the programs first win in the postseason tournament in a 3-0 decision over Howard.
Last season, Kowalczyk helped steer the Johnnies to a NIVC Fab Four appearance. She finished the season with 1,208 assists, averaging 8.93 per set. In one of her best matches, the Polish native dished out 49 assists in a 3-1 victory over UConn to send St. John's to the Fab Four against Bowling Green.
In the Tauron Liga, ŁKS Commercecon Łódź finished in second place last season and boasts two league titles since the league's inception since 2005. Its most recent title came in during the 2022-23 season.
