Volleyball Gears Up for Weekend Matches in Queens

The Red Storm ready for battles with UConn and Providence
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (6-17, 2-8 BIG EAST) is set to host its last pair of weekend home matches for the 2025 regular season schedule this weekend. The Red Storm will take on UConn on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Providence on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., marking the second meeting with teams during BIG EAST play.
On Friday night the team will host a Halloween Costume Contest for all guests in attendance. Candy prizes will be awarded to the winning participants. The following day, the program welcomes back former Johnnies for Alumni Day. A pre-match reception is set to take place at 1 p.m. in the Hall of Fame. To register for the event, click here.
Live stats for the match can be found on redstormsports.com. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+. On Friday night Johnny Gadamowitz and Nick DeLuca will be on the call, while DeLuca handles the broadcast on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Joanne Persico is one win away from 600 career victories. In her 32nd season at the helm, Persico ranks 16th among active head coaches in career wins and is the winningest head coach at a single BIG EAST program. Over the last 10 matches against UConn and Providence, Persico has led St. John's to a 5-5 record against the Huskies and a 9-1 record against the Friars.
Senior standout Erin Jones was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll earlier this week after the Albuquerque, N.M., native picked up her sixth and seventh triple-doubles of the season. Her seven triple-doubles leads the BIG EAST.
St. John's concluded its Midwest road swing with a pair contests at Xavier and Butler last weekend. Against Xavier, Jones recorded her sixth triple-double of the season, posting 10 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs. Martina Ghezzi led the team with 11 kills, while Martina Capponcelli added 19 assists. On the defensive side, Rashanny Solano Smith collected 24 digs to pace the back row. On Saturday evening against Butler, Jones registered her second straight triple-double and seventh of the season, finishing with a line of 18 kills, 19 assists and 13 digs. Ghezzi posted 15 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while Solano Smith anchored the defense once again with a season-high 25 digs.
Earlier in the month, Red Storm delivered a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Friars, in a match that featured 37 ties and 18 lead changes. Against UConn, St. John's fell 3-1 as Ella Parker posted a career-high 16 kills to lead the Red Storm, while Jones tallied 21 assists and 14 digs.
With six matches remaining in the regular season, UConn finds itself in contention of a BIG EAST conference tournament spot. The Huskies hold 16-6 overall record and a 5-5 record in league play, sitting one game outside the four-team playoff field. In their last five matches at Carnesecca Arena, UConn is 3-2. The last time in Queens, the Red Storm downed the Huskies in the NIVC Great Eight via a 3-1 decision.
As a team, the UConn ranks in the top-three of two statistical categories in the BIG EAST. They sit third in team hitting percentage, swinging .262. Not only do they lead the conference in service aces (188) and service aces per set (2.32), the Huskies also rank second in the NCAA Division I in both categories. UConn's offensive unit is led by Emma Werkmeister who leads the team with 245 kills and leads the NCAA Division I in total service aces with 56.
Providence is 10-13 this season, with a 1-9 record in league play. Earlier this month, the Johnnies walked away with their seventh straight win over Friars. Over the last ten matches,
St. John's hold a 9-1 advantage. In the last five matches at Carnesecca Arena, the Friars are 1-4. The last time Providence won in Queens was during the fall of 2021.

The Friars sit atop the rankings in both blocks (202) and blocks per set (2.43), while slotting second in digs (1,209) and third in digs per set (14.57). Hadley Pride ranks seventh in the NCAA Division I in total digs with 313 and third in digs per set with 5.36.
