Red Storm trailed by nine with 6:46 remaining before engineering a furious comeback

HAMDEN, Conn. – With its back against the wall trailing by nine with under seven minutes to play, the St. John's women's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) roared back in the fourth quarter to down Quinnipiac (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) on the road, 53-51, on Tuesday night.

The Red Storm went 20 fourth quarter points and forced the Bobcats into nine turnovers during the final frame. The Johnnies utilized a crucial 9-0 scoring run to complete the comeback after trailing 42-33 with 6:46 on the clock at M&T Bank Arena.

In a low-scoring affair, the Red Storm were balanced offensively five players scoring seven points or more. Neither team led by double-digits in a back-and-forth affair on Veterans Day.

Beautiful Waheed logged her first double-digit scoring outing of her NCAA Division I career finishing with 10 points, including the crucial go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:36 remaining. The junior shot 4-for-5 (80%) from the field, 2-for-3 (66.7%) and pulled down four boards.

Sa'Mya Wyatt finished with a near double-double tallying nine points and eight rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Shaulana Wagner chipped in nine points on 3-for-5 (60%) shooting, all in the second half and dished out three assists.

Off the bench, Brooke Moore recorded eight points and a game-high three steals. Daniela Abies added seven points, four boards and two steals.

As play got underway on Tuesday night, Wyatt opened the scoring with a straightaway triple from the top of the key. The Red Storm started hot from deep as Lavelle nailed an early triple off a feed from Wagner, 6-2. Waheed found the bottom of the bucket later in the first marking the third triple of the quarter. Moore flushed a driving lay-up top close the quarter as the Red Storm held a 15-10 advantage at the end of the opening frame.

In the second stanza, the Bobcats started the frame off with an 8-0 scoring stretch to claim a 18-15 edge. Wyatt brought the run to a halt corralling the offensive rebound setting up the easy lay-in. Jailah Donald retook the lead for St. John's with a stepback mid-range jumper at the 4:54 mark in the quarter, 19-18. In the final five minutes of the opening half the two sides traded four lead changes and three ties as the Bobcats went into the break with a two-point advantage, 25-23.

In the third frame, the game remained tight as both teams battled hard defensively. Wagner knocked down one from beyond-the-arc to quickly propel the Johnnies back into the lead, 26-25. As the scoreline swung back in the Bobcats favor Wagner dialed one in from downtown once again to make it 29-29 with 7:26 remaining in the quarter. Quinnipiac built an eight-point advantage during a Red Storm scoring drought. Wyatt's second chance putback ended the Bobcats' 8-0 run with 1:41 left in the frame. The sophomore brought the Red Storm within four after another bucket inside the paint, 37-33, heading into the final 10 minutes.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats lead grew to as many as nine scoring the first five points of the frame forcing a St. John's timeout. The Red Storm came out in full-court pressure as Abies tipped in the incoming inbound pass. Wagner tapped the loose ball right back to the forward for the easy lay-in. The Johnnies forced another turnover leading to a Moore fadeway jumper as the deficit quickly shrunk to five, 42-37, with 5:41 remaining.

With 5:06 remaining, Abies ignited the crucial run with a finish through contact completing the and one with the Red Storm's first free throw attempt of the game. After climbing within one, Waheed created space and flushed a triple to complete a pivotal 9-0 run give the Red Storm its first lead since the 3:09 mark in the second quarter, 46-44. The Bobcats went onto tie the game for sixth time before Waheed came up clutch again dropping a driving lay-up to put St. John's in front, 48-46, with 2:50 to play.

In crunch time, Wagner came up clutch sending a fallaway jumper through the bottom of the net as the shot clock expired to put St. John's up by four, 48-44, with 1:17 remaining. In the final minute, Quinnipiac made it a one possession game. The Johnnies missed the lay-up attempt, but Abies came up with a crucial offensive rebound to bleed the clock down to under 20 seconds. After a pair of missed free throws, Quinnipiac had an opportunity at the final buzzer trailing by two but the Red Storm defense smothered the Bobcats not allowing a shot attempt to secure the comeback win for St. John's.

St. John's will be back in action on Friday afternoon when it readies for a three-game homestand beginning with a meeting against Yale at 1:30 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena.
