The Red Storm mounted a nine-point comeback on Tuesday night to pick up a road victory at Quinnipiac, 53-51. The Red Storm trailed 42-33 with 6:46 remaining before engineering a 13-2 run to turn the tides at M&T Bank Arena. Beautiful Waheed knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer and finished a crucial lay-up as the Johnnies handed the Bobcats their first non-conference home loss since Nov. 17, 2023. St. John's forced nine fourth quarter turnovers during its comeback in Hamden, Conn.
Waheed played a crucial role in Tuesday night's win posting the first double-digit scoring performance of her NCAA Division I career adding a team-high 10 points. The former NJCAA Second Team All-American shot 3-for-5 from the field, 2-for-3 from long-range and chipped in four rebounds. Sa'Mya Wyatt posted a near double-double adding season-high's of nine points and eight rebounds. Five St. John's played added seven points or more in a balanced scoring effort.
St. John's is seeking its 850th all-time victory on Friday afternoon against the Bulldogs. With a victory, the Red Storm will become the fifth active BIG EAST program to reach the 850-win threshold joining Connecticut (1,345), DePaul (988), Villanova (982) and Creighton (890). Established as a varsity program in 1974, the Johnnies have recorded 32 winning seasons including 18 over the last 21 seasons with Head Coach Joe Tartamella as an assistant or head coach.
The Red Storm reserves continue to make an impact accounting for nearly half the team's scoring. The Johnnies are logging 28.3 bench points per game, which ranks third best in the BIG EAST. Liberty transfer Brooke Moore has paced the squad with 10.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. Fellow reserve Daniela Abies has registered 7.0 points and 9.0 boards per contest after a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double in her St. John's debut against Le Moyne on Nov. 13. Sophomore Janeya Grant ranks third on the team adding 8.0 points per game and has made five 3-pointers, the guard went for a career-high 15 points at Harvard.
As has been customary during the Tartamella Era, St. John's has been stifling on the defensive end of the floor. The Red Storm have limited opponents to 55.0 points per game and 34.7 shooting from the field, both marks rank top-four in the conference. The Johnnies rank 17th in NCAA Division I and lead the league with 7.0 blocked shots per game. Moore ranks seventh in the country with 10 blocks on the year, 12 shy of last year's team leader just three games into the 2025-26 campaign.
St. John's and Yale will meet for the seventh time on Friday with all meetings occurring over the last 11 years. The Red Storm have won all six previous meetings in the series, including five by double-figures. In the last meeting in New Haven, St. John's topped Yale, 75-56, at John J. Lee Amphitheatre on Dec. 21, 2023. Unique Drake exploded for 30 points on 10-of-19 from field goal range and 8-of-9 from the free throw line in the winning effort.
Yale enters the contest with an 0-2 record and readies for its first road contest of the season. On Tuesday night, the Bulldogs fell at home to Hofstra, 73-66, in New Haven. Yale rallied from a double-digit second half deficit to tie the game in the final frame but ultimately fell to the Pride on Veteran's Day.
Yale's frontcourt duo of Kiley Captsraw and Ciniya Moore leads the team averaging 19.0 points per game. Luisa Vydrova is the third Bulldog to average double-figures in scoring adding 13.0 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds.
Following Friday's contest, St. John's will meet No. 20/20 Oklahoma State on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Carnesecca Arena.
